3Santa Maria de Belém, or just Belém is a parish
of Lisbon, Portugal, located 6 km west of the
present city centre and 2 km west of Ponte 25 de
Abril (25 April Bridge). Its name is derived from
the Portuguese for Bethlehem

Empire and was built for the Exhibition of the
Portuguese World in 1940

aquatic beast in classical Greco-Roman mythology.

25Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower.
Torre de Belém was built as a fortified
lighthouse, late in the reign of Dom Manuel
(15151520), to guard the entrance to the port.
It stood on a little island in right side of the
Tagus, surrounded by water. The tower composed of
a bastion and the 30 m four storey tower is a
prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline
style, but it also incorporates hints of other
architectural styles

33Belém is famous as the place from which many of
the great Portuguese explorers set off on their
voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the
place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India
in 1497

dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries)
celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or
Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th
centuries

Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose) was executed using
different types of marble. Designed by the
architect Cristino da Silva, it includes a Mappa

39The 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is a
suspension bridge inaugurated 1966 (a train
platform was added in 1999) often compared to the
Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA
(constructed by the same company) With a total
length of 2,277 m, it is the 23rd largest
suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck
carries six car lanes, while the lower deck
carries two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge
was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar). The
name "25 de Abril" commemorates the Carnation
Revolution

41You can get a nice aerial view of the city by
traveling across the bridge. You can catch a
southbound train in several stations, such as
Oriente, Entrecampos or Sete Rios, and travel
towards Pragal. The ticket costs only 1.80.

43The Christ the King statue (Cristo-Rei) inspired
by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de
Janeiro, is a Catholic monument and shrine
dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ
overlooking the city of Lisbon

acknowledge divine protection for having spared
