Coimbra
2Dragão by the Portuguese sculptor Aureliano de
Aguiar
The medieval capital of Portugal for over a
hundred years, and site of the countrys greatest
university for the past five centuries, Coimbra
is an historic, cultured beauty. Its beautiful
core cascades down a hillside in a lovely setting
on the east bank of the Rio Mondego it's a
multicoloured collage of buildings spanning
nearly a millennium
3Situated on a hill overlooking the city, the
University of Coimbra with its colleges grew and
evolved over more than seven centuries within the
old town. The University of Coimbra has approx
20,000 students, and hosts one of the largest
communities of inter-national students in
Portugal, being the most cosmopolitan Portuguese
university

Library Biblioteca Joanina established in the
18th century and considered one of the most

25Built between 1717 and 1728, it is one of the
exponents of the Baroque Portuguese and one of
the richest European libraries. Will be known as
Baroque Library in honor and memory of King John
V (1707-1750), who sponsored its construction and
whose portrait, made by Domenico Duprà (1725),
dominates the space

27The structure is protected by being constructed
of oak woods, that, in addition to its dense
nature (which makes it difficult for wood
penetration) elicits an odor that is repellent to
papirófagos, insects that survive on paper. The
books are also protected by a small colony of
bats, that during the night consume the insects
that appear, eliminating the pest and assisting
the maintenance of the stacks. Naturally, these
mammals require additional care in order to
prevent damage to the grains of the wooden
furniture. Nightly, functionaries cover the
"bufets" (credenzas) with leather towels, and in
the morning, the library is cleaned
28São Miguel Chapel was planned by Marco Pires
between 1517 and 1522. The chapel is a tourist
attraction of the university old quarter. It has
a choir, Coro da Capela da Universidade de
Coimbra, that performs in the church. Although
Coimbra University teaching and administrative
staff has priority, São Miguel Chapel rents its
spare time and space to any person outside the
university community and is a popular place for
catholic weddings in the town
