Castles can be seen almost everywhere in
Scotland. There is very little evidence of
castles from the early 12th century. Castle
building came here with the introduction of
feudalism in the 12th century. Initially, they
were wooden structures, many of which were later
rebuilt into stone castles with high walls. They
were buildings that combined fortifications and
residences. Many of the castles built on the
borders took the form of tower houses. From the
fifteenth century, a phase of building
Renaissance palaces took place. In the 17th and
18th centuries, the military importance of
castles declined and they became tourist
attractions. Elements of medieval castles, royal
palaces and tower houses were used in the
construction of Scottish baronial manor houses.
Most Scottish castles remain in private ownership.
En Escocia se pueden ver castillos
prácticamente por todas partes. Hay muy pocos
testimonios de castillos de principios del siglo
XII. La construcción de castillos llegó aquí con
la introducción del feudalismo en el siglo XII.
Al principio, eran estructuras de madera, muchas
de las cuales se reconstruyeron más tarde como
castillos de piedra con altos muros. Eran
edificios que combinaban fortificaciones y

existuje len velmi málo dôkazov o existencii
hradov. Stavba hradov sa sem dostala so zavedením
feudalizmu v 12. storocí. Spociatku to boli
drevené stavby, z ktorých mnohé boli neskôr
prebudované na hrady kamenné s vysokými múrmi.
Boli to budovy, ktoré kombinovali opevnenia a
rezidencie. Mnohé z hradov vybudovaných na
hraniciach mali podobu vežových domov. Od
pätnásteho storocia prebiehala fáza budovania
renesancných palácov. V 17. a 18. storocí
vojenský význam hradov upadal a stali sa
turistickými atrakciami. Prvky stredovekých
hradov, královských palácov a vežových domov boli
použité pri stavbe škótskych barónskych panských
domov. Väcšina škótskych hradov, zostáva v
súkromnom vlastníctve.
