Tsedang Its History
Noted to be the fourth largest city in
Tibet, Tsedang, alternatively known as Zêtang,
Zedang, Tsethang, Tsetang, and even Zedang Shanan
in Chinese, is located in the Yarlung Valley,
southeast of Lhasa. Part of the Nedong District
of Shannan Prefecture, has been the capital of
the Yarlung region of Shannan for thousands of
years, and was a seat of the ancient Tibetan
Emperors. The city is also the capital of Shannan
Prefecture, and is the second largest settlement
in the history of the U-Tsang region. Read more

Gyantse Its History
Gyantse in Shigatse Prefecture of Tibet
Autonomous Region was once considered to be the
third largest city in Tibet, although there are
now several much larger towns in the region.
Located in the Nyang Chu Valley, the town lies on
what was once one of the ancient trade routes
between Tibet and the Sikkim Province of India.
Old trade routes led from Gyantse to Shigatse to
the west and up over the Karo La Pass into
central Tibet. Read more information about
Shigatse CLICK.
5
Tingri Its History
Tingri was an important trading town for the
local people, who would trade Tibetan wool, salt,
and livestock for grain, rice, and iron from the
Nepali Sherpas. To the north lies the upland
basin known as the Tingri Plain, which was one of
the best pasturelands in the area, at more than
4,500 meters above sea level. Fed by shallow,
fast flowing snowmelt rivers that make it a lush
grassland, it is ideal for grazing animals, and
has long been the home to many nomadic herders.
Once covered in gazelles, blue sheep, and
antelopes, the plains were a major source of meat
in the past, though many of the animals were
hunted almost to extinction.. Read more
