2 Haglunds Deformity
Haglunds Deformity (Retrocalcaneal Exostosis) is
a condition that affects the heel, causing pain
and discomfort. At Florida Foot and Ankle
Specialists, we are dedicated to providing the
best foot and ankle care available. Our highly
skilled team of board-certified podiatrists has
completed additional fellowship training in
diagnosing and treating a wide range of foot,
ankle, and lower leg disorders.
3 What is a Haglunds Deformity?
A Haglunds Deformity is a bony prominence
that develops on the back of your heel bone where
the Achilles Tendon inserts. It is also known as
Retrocalcaneal Exostosis and can cause pain and
discomfort. This deformity can be caused by a
variety of factors, including genetics, foot
structure, tight calf muscles, and wearing poorly
fitting shoes. It is more commonly seen in women
due to their tendency to wear high-heeled
shoes. If you have a Haglunds Deformity, you may
experience swelling, redness, and tenderness at
the bony prominence. It can also lead to friction
and irritation of the skin, causing blisters or
calluses to form.
4 Treatment for Haglunds Deformity depends on
the severity of your symptoms. In mild cases,
simple home remedies such as wearing open-backed
shoes and using heel pads can provide relief by
reducing pressure on the bony prominence. In more
severe cases, your doctor may recommend physical
therapy to stretch tight calf muscles and
strengthen surrounding muscles to alleviate
symptoms.

5 Prevention
While some factors that contribute to Haglunds
Deformity, such as genetics or foot structure,
cannot be prevented, there are steps you can take
to lower your risk of developing this condition.
These include wearing properly fitting shoes with
a low or no heel and avoiding high-impact
activities that put pressure on the heels. If
you are experiencing symptoms of Haglunds
Deformity, it is important to seek medical
attention from a qualified specialist like
