About This Presentation
Title:

Shades of Blue 15 Lin Fengmian 1

Description:

Collection of artworks in shades of blue by Lin Fengmian (Chinese, 1900-1991), a pioneering Chinese painter known for his merging of Western and Eastern painting styles to depict landscapes, elegant women, and birds. The assigning of symbolic meanings to colors is probably as old as symbolism itself. In fact, words are well adapted for description and the arousing of emotion, but for many kinds of precise thought other symbols are much better. (John B. S. Haldane). – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Lin Fengmian was a pioneering Chinese painter
known for his merging of Western and Eastern
painting styles to depict landscapes, elegant
women, and birds. Lins paintings are
characterized by the hallmarks of traditional
Chinese paintings perspective and stylistic ink
brush techniques, while also utilizing the
impasto, colors, and boldness of Expressionistic
European painters like Henri Matisse. A highly
influential figure in Chinas modern painting
movements, he went on to teach Zao Wou-Ki, Wu
Guanzhong, and other renown artists. Born on
November 22, 1900 in Guangdong, China, he spent
the early years of his career in Paris and Berlin
studying painting in the early 1920s. Drawing on
these various influences, his figures are often
set against a monochromatic background of ink
wash and line drawing, creating a dynamic and
brightly colored composition. Unfortunately, when
Lin returned to China he was caught in the
conflicts of the Sino-Japanese War and the
Cultural Revolution, during which much of his
work was destroyed. Lin spent the last years of
his life living in Hong Kong, attempting to
recreate the paintings that had been lost. He
died on August 12, 1991 in Hong Kong, China
