"the place where the chia grows", a medicinal

29La Capilla de Colores
The canyon's creation began around the same time
as the Grand Canyon in the U.S. state of Arizona,
by a crack in the area's crust and subsequent
erosion by the Grijalva River. Beautiful features
can be appreciated along its walls, such
as Cueva de Colores (cave of colors) and
Christmas tree waterfall Cascada Árbol de
Navidad
The best known of the area's caves is the Cueva
de Colores ("Cave of Colors"). This cave gets its
name from the filtration of magnesium , potassium
and other minerals which form colors on
the walls, especially shades of pink. La Cueva
also contains a small shrine embedded high in the
wall. An altar to the Virgen de Guadalupe sits
next to a plaque honoring the parks founder, el
ultimo de los exploradores vivientes the last
of the living explorers, it says

39El Arbol de Navidad
Sumidero Canyon is dotted with waterfalls (many
of which are not visible from the viewpoints
along the road) but Christmas Tree (Arbol de
Navidad) is a waterfall unlike any other. The
water spills from a hole above into moss-layered,
green rocks that are shaped like the branches of
a Christmas tree. Arbol de Navidad is an amazing
natural wonder - a waterfall shaped like a
massive Christmas tree, on the side of a cliff
in Sumidero Canyon
