About This Presentation
Title:

Myanmar 76 Yangon Shwedagon Pagoda2

Description:

The Shwedagon Pagoda on the summit of Singuttara Hill is a unique masterpiece of Buddhist architecture, adapting a natural hill, imbued with sacred significance since time immemorial, into one of the most iconic historic Buddhist stupas of the world. The Pagoda on Singuttara Hill is an outstanding example of the transformation, over time, of the funerary reliquary stupa (tumulus) enshrining relics of the Buddha(s) into a center of pilgrimage and cult veneration. According to legend, the Shwedagon Pagoda was constructed more than 2,600 years ago, which would make it the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. Currently scholarly research by historians and archaeologists indicate that the pagoda was first built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Burma is one of the most overwhelmingly (about
90) Buddhist countries in the world. And for the
Burmese Buddhist there is no more important
pilgrimage site (domestically, anyway) than
Shwedagon Paya ("paya" meaning, roughly, "pagoda"
in Burmese). Sitting like a giant golden Hershey
kiss on the highest point in Yangon, Shwedagon
looks over everything, and everything looks up to
Shwedagon. It greets the first rays of sunlight
in the early morning and puts the sun to sleep at
night. Even at night it remains illuminated by
flood lamp, when it shimmers in stark brilliant
contrast to the inky Burmese night sky. It
outshines the moon.

There are four entrances to Shwedagon pagoda that
lead up a flight of covered steps to the platform
on Singuttara Hill Four covered walkways lead up

Despite reforms in the recent years, Myanmar is
still a relatively closed country and has an
underdeveloped tourism sector. Four covered

surrounding the hills.
