Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the
foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres), surrounded
by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town
of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime
republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, an
important trading power in the Mediterranean
between 839 and around 1200

Flavio Gioia, traditionally considered the first
to introduce the mariner's compass to Europe, is

Almost two hundred years have passed after the
conversion from a Francis-can monastery grounded
in the thirteenth century by St Francis of Assisi
first into an inn and after that into a
Historical hotel designated "Hotel Luna Convento"
which has been continuously managed by five
generations of the Barbaro family. In 1879, Ibsen
stayed for three months in room 5. His "The
Doll's House" was born here and indeed the second
act concludes with a rip roaring rendition of
tarantella music
