Italia Reggia di Caserta 5 Visiting the Palace3

Description:

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta) is a former royal residence in Caserta, southern Italy, constructed for the Bourbon kings of Naples. It is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; its nomination described it as "the swan song of the spectacular art of the Baroque, from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions of multidirectional space". – PowerPoint PPT presentation

The Throne Room
5
The Throne Room, which is forty metres long, and
illuminated by six windows, was completed in 1845
for the occasion of the VII Congress of the
Italian Scientists, at the instigation of
Ferdinand II of Bourbon. The ends of the ceiling
display eye-catching bass-reliefs in gilded
stucco of Fame, sculpted by Tito Angelini
(1806-1878) and Tommaso Arnaud (1800-1860)
6
The throne, made of carved and gilded wood, has
armrests in the shape of winged lions and two
sirens, symbolising the city of Naples
7
Probably created as a throne for a ship judging
by the black-tinted wooden base, equipped with
four handles, it was probably used for the royal
palace in Naples by Ferdinand I of the Two
Sicilies after the Bourbon Restoration
8
The architrave of the room is decorated with
portraits of the rulers, from Ruggiero the Norman
to Ferdinand II of Bourbon
