41The Hoki Museum is Japan's first museum dedicated
to Realist painting. Today, the Hoki Museum
collections include 500 works by some 60
painters, ranging from great masters to young
artists. The Hoki Museum's building was
specifically designed and constructed for this
collection. Made up of three stories, one above
ground, two below, the galleries are layered,
long corridors filled with images. A section of
the structure floats in the air

Ryo SHIOTANI was born on November 12, 1975, in
Tokyo. According to his mother, even as a child
he was very good at colored-pencil drawings. He
was at Meiji Gakuin Junior and Senior High
School. While in the Junior High, he belonged to
the art club, when his teacher found his
outstanding painting talent in him. He went on to
Musashino Art University to study oil paintings
seriously and enhance his own skills. Two years
after graduating from university, he held a big
solo exhibit in one of the department store at
Ginza, which was an unprecedented news in
Japanese art world at that time. Since then he
has held many big solo exhibitions all over
Japan. His works and his way of painting have
been introduced on the leading art magazines many
times, getting much attention, and he also made a
guest appearance on the popular TV Art Program in
2016.
43MEAM (Museum of Modern Art) in Barcelona
introduced 60 works of the Hoki Museum as one of
the events of the 150th anniversary of the
establishment of diplomatic relations between
Japan and Spain in 2018. This is a grand project
in collaboration with MEAM, in which works of
Spanish realism will hold an exhibition at the
Hoki Museum next year, and then touring museums
all over Japan as a joint exhibition between
Japan and Spain. As a first step, Japanese
realist paintings were introduced to Spain for
the first time, and it was a great honor for me
to include five of my works in them.
