Italia Salerno 4 Cripta di San Matteo

Description:

Salerno is a city in Campania (southwestern Italy) and is the capital of the province of the same name. Salerno is located on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today Salerno is an important cultural centre in Campania and Italy. The St. Matthew Cathedral founded by Roberto the Guiscard and consecrated by Pope Gregory VII, was officially opened in March 1084. The present structure dates back to the earthquake of 5th June 1688, when it was completely rebuilt. The crypt, believed to house the remains of Matthew the Apostle, is a groin vaulted hall with a basilica-like plan divided by columns. It was restored under design by Domenico Fontana and his son Giulio in 1606-1608, with marble decorations added in the 18th century. All of the ceiling frescoes are painted by Belisario Corenzio and depict scenes from the Gospel of Matthew, as well as some episodes of the history of Salerno (such as the siege of the city by the French). – PowerPoint PPT presentation

in the 10th century. The cathedral also contains
the tomb of Pope Gregory VII.

The relics of the Apostle San Matteo were brought
to Salerno in 954, but this impressive crypt
dates from the first half of the 17th century
when the Kings of Spain, Filippo II and Filippo
III, chose to demonstrate their dedication to San
Matteo by redecorating the crypt in a lavish
Baroque style featuring inlaid marble, frescoes
and a bronze statue of San Matteo by Michelangelo
Naccarino, the artist who designed the statue of
Sant Andrea in the Duomo of Amalfi
