7Manolo Valdés is a prominent Spanish painter
residing in New York. He was the introducer in
Spain of a form of artistic expression that
combines political and social commitment with
humour and irony. In 1957 he enrolled in the
Valencia School of Fine Arts in San Carlos where
he spent two years, abandoned his studies to
devote himself to painting. In 1964 he founded
the artistic group Equipo Crónica together with
Juan Antonio Toledo and Rafael Solbes. He
continued working in Valencia for a few years
until 1989 he travelled to New York where he set
up his studio and continued experimenting with
new forms of expression. He also maintained a
studio in Madrid for the realization of large
sculptures, alternating creation in both cities

34Valdés's public sculpture dates from 1999 when he
began work on a project for Bilbao. In the same
year, he received a commission for a major
project for Valencia in connection with the
famous Dama de Elche (Lady of Elche) sculpture,
for which the first large-scale model was
installed on Park Avenue, New York. In 2000, his
11-ton, seven-meter-high sculpture titled Menina
was installed in the roundabout of Salvador
Allende boulevard in the Paseo de la Chopera,
Alcobendas, Madrid

LA COQUETA The secret of my happiness? The
elusive smile that fuels the hunger for love
of travelers The slight grimace that praises
the curve of my lips and discovers the
lightning snow of my teeth. A knee an instep
the earlobe the fins of the nose can
insinuate beautiful things and fill men with
desires. My friends, you only dream I make
dream.
