Introduction
Teaching your dog to sit is one of the basic
commands every dog owner should know. Whether you
are starting with a new puppy or teaching an
adult dog, here are the steps you can take to
get your dog to sit on command.
3
Get Your Dogs Attention
The first step to getting your dog to sit is to
have their attention. Call your dogs name and
wait for them to look at you.
4
Hold a Treat
Hold a treat in your hand and place it just
above your dogs nose. Make sure your hand is
far enough back so that their head naturally
moves up, causing them to sit.
Say Sit
As your dogs head moves up, say sit in a
clear and firm tone. Be consistent and always
use the same word.

Reward Your Dog
Practice Practice this exercise frequently,
gradually lessening your reliance on using the
treat while making sure to reward your dog with
lots of praise every time they sit.
As soon as your dog sits, give them the treat
and praise them. Keep the treat just out of
reach so that they have to stay in the seated
position to receive it.

Tips
Keep training sessions short, with plenty of
breaks. Ten minutes is a good length to begin
with. Use positive reinforcement techniques,
such as treats, praise, and petting. Never
punish your dog if they dont sit on command.
Instead, remain calm, and start the process
again. If your dog isnt interested in the treat,
try using a favorite toy or simply petting them
as a reward.
