Paestum is an important ancient city. It lies
near the coast about 85 km south of Naples. It
covers an area of 1.2 km2. It was founded in the
7th century BC. and it was called Poseidonia. It
is surrounded by protective walls less than 5 km
long, along which 28 watchtowers were built. 24
of them have survived to this day. The city
became a Roman colony in 273 BC, when it was
renamed Paestum. It was abandoned in the Middle
Ages. Its remains were rediscovered in the 18th
century. The ruins of the city are famous for
their three ancient Greek temples, which are in
very good condition. These are temples in the
Doric style two Hera Temples and a Temple of
Athena. There is also a museum with a collection
of Greek antiques from southern Italy. In 1998,
it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Paestum es una importante ciudad antigua. Se
encuentra cerca de la costa, a unos 85 km al sur
de Nápoles. Tiene una superficie de 1,2 km2. Fue
fundada en el siglo VII a.C. y se llamó
Poseidonia. Está rodeado por murallas protectoras
de menos de 5 km de largo, a lo largo de las
cuales se construyeron 28 torres de vigilancia.
24 de ellos han sobrevivido hasta el día de hoy.
La ciudad se convirtió en colonia romana en el
273 a.C., cuando pasó a llamarse Paestum. Fue
abandonado en la Edad Media. Sus restos fueron
redescubiertos en el siglo XVIII. Las ruinas de
la ciudad son famosas por sus tres antiguos
templos griegos, que se encuentran en muy buenas
condiciones. Se trata de templos de estilo
dórico dos templos de Hera y un templo de
Atenea. También hay un museo con una colección de
antigüedades griegas del sur de Italia. En 1998,
fue añadido a la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de

blízkosti pobrežia asi 85 km južne od Neapola.
Pokrýva územie o rozlohe 1,2 km2. Bolo založené v
7. storocí pred n.l. a volalo sa Poseidonia. Je
obklopené ochrannými múrmi v dlžke necelých 5 km
pozdlž ktorých bolo postavených 28 strážnych
veží. Do dnes sa z nich zachovalo 24. Mesto sa
stalo rímskou kolóniou v roku 273 pred n.l., ked
bolo premenované na Paestum. V stredoveku bolo
opustené. Jeho pozostatky boli znovu objavené v
18. storocí. Ruiny mesta sú známe svojimi tromi
starovekými gréckymi chrámami, ktoré sú vo velmi
dobrom stave. Ide o chrámy v dórskom štýle a to o
dva chrámy zasvätené bohyni Hera a Athénin
chrám. Nachádza sa tu aj múzeum so zbierkou
gréckych antických predmetov z južného Talianska.
V roku 1998 bolo zapísané na zoznam Svetového
Dedicstva UNESCO.
