Sandblasting is a process that has been around
for centuries, and with the advent of new
technologies and improvements, its popularity
continues to grow. This article will discuss the
factors that can affect the total cost of
sandblasting various surfaces such as concrete
driveways, automotive parts, marine boats etc,
the type of sanding grit being used in Australia.
3
  • The cost of sandblasting depends on the following
    factors
  • Thickness of coating or corrosion to be removed
  • The thicker the coating (eg powder coating) the
more time it takes to remove compared to light
    mill scale removal
  • Geographic location
  • Customers in remote areas have to pay a premium
if there are no suitable sandblasting businesses
    nearby
  • Portability of object
  • If the object can be transported, the cost is
reduced compared to a fixed object such as a
bridge that has to be encapsulated
  • Profile desired to be achieved on the substrate
  • A deeper profile takes longer to blast.

4
  • The equipment required, environmental cleanup
costs and occupational safety such as safety
boots, clothing, gloves and breathing apparatus,
    adds to the cost.
  • The average cost for wet sandblasting a medium
sized car is approximately 3000 4000.
Carrying out that work would take a good part of
the day, depending on the thickness of the
    corrosion and coating.
  • Unlike interior walls, type and condition of
surface, which tend to be relatively smooth in
texture, exterior surfaces have a much rougher
texture due to weathering and exposure over time.
The type of grit used will depend on how rude the
surface has become more refined grains such as
glass beads or aluminium oxide (Alumina) work
best for removing layers from smoother surfaces.
In contrast, coarser sands like garnet may need
to be applied first if the surface has become
    very worn.

5
  • Preparation Permits
  • If you live in a conservation area where
sandblasting is not allowed, this may affect the
type of grit used and, therefore, the total cost.
For example, an exterior wall needs to be done,
requiring coarser grains like garnet or river
sand (which are usually only available for
outdoor use). Permits should also cover these
types of abrasives as they can damage brickwork
    over time.
  • Other factors affecting price include the number
of coats, interior or exterior work, any
    prep-work needed before starting, and
location/distance from the company carrying out
the work. Location Sandblast costs vary depending
on what part of the country you live in. For
example, sandblasting prices are usually higher
than in some regions because its more expensive
to hire equipment, and there may not be any
    companies offering this service nearby.

When comparing different quotes, make sure that
all parties involved (i.e. company offering
service customer/potential client) adhere to
current industry standards and any relevant
regulations that apply in your area, for example,
Safe Contractor. This ensures both safety of
workers carrying out work plus peace of mind for
clients hiring them too! If you would like to
