Title: Traffic Loop Detector

1
Traffic Loop Detector
  • Los Angeles Signal Construction, Inc.

  • A traffic loop detector is buried in the pavement
at an intersection (you can often see rectangular
cuts in the road). When metal is placed on the
    vehicle, the loop will electromagnetically
    trigger the signal.
  • In order to operate properly, the loop detector
requires ideal placement. This is important for
the safety of motorists and for optimum traffic
    light function.

Durability
  • Traffic Loop Detector is a long length of wire
that has a repetitive pattern that can detect the
presence of vehicles. It has been the workhorse
of the signal industry for years due to its
    relatively low initial installation cost.
  • It has become a standard for vehicle detection in
parking lots, and car park boom gate systems. A
circular cut is made in the road surface and wire
is wrapped around it. When a vehicle drives over
the loop it disturbs the magnetic field and tells
the intersection controller there are cars
waiting to go through the red light.
  • It is not as prone to false triggers as other
traffic sensors. This is especially important
when it comes to scooters, motorcycles and
bicycles stopped at a traffic signal on
fixed-time cycles. They can easily pass over the
loop without triggering it because they do not
have the mass of larger metal vehicles. This can
    result in unnecessary signal delays.

4
Reliability
  • A traffic loop detector is a very reliable
device. In the automated gate industry we use
them to trigger gates for access and egress. The
vehicle detection loops are made up of a
continuous length of wire that repeats at a set
frequency. When something big and metal rolls
over the loop it changes the frequency and the
loop detector detects this change and sends a
    signal to the controller.
  • Detectors like these are also used at
intersections and on motorways to extend green
lights. When something passes over the detector
it disturbs the magnetic field and signals the
intersection controller there are cars waiting to
pass. Traffic loop detectors are not the only way
to detect vehicles, passive infrared, ultrasonic
and acoustic can all be used for vehicle count,
presence, or lane occupancy. These sensors all
operate differently but they are all just as
reliable as a traffic loop detector.

Installation
  • If you've ever driven into an intersection and
the traffic light is telling you to wait, there
may be several reasons why. Perhaps the
pedestrian pushbuttons are faulty, or maybe the
signal controller isn't properly programmed. But,
one of the most common culprits is a faulty loop
    detector.
  • A traffic loop detector is a sensor used to
detect vehicular traffic and trigger automated
gates to open. You've probably traveled over
thousands of them without even realizing it.
  • A loop detector consists of wire "coiled" into a
square, circle or rectangle shape that's
installed in the road surface and works like a
metal detector. When a car drives over the loop,
it creates a magnetic field that tells the
controller there is a vehicle in the
intersection. Unlike telecoils, which pick up
audio frequencies, loop sensors are specifically
designed to detect vehicles and only vehicles.
They are considered the most reliable vehicle
    detection method available.

Maintenance
  • Traffic Loop Installation are the most popular
kind of traffic sensor used to trigger traffic
lights. They are easy to install and operate,
reliable and long-lasting and automate a large
    majority of vehicle detection.
  • However, the quality of these sensors can be
affected by a variety of factors like sun glare,
fog or temperature. These factors can cause
vehicles to be incorrectly classified and result
in the signal turning red even though no cars are
    present.
  • Fortunately, there are some great solutions for
this problem that can solve these issues and
improve the overall performance of your loop
    detectors.
  • One option is to switch over to a more advanced
system like video detection. This is an excellent
alternative that uses cameras to see what is
happening at the intersection in real time. This
allows the system to better understand demand and
run a more efficient light cycle. This can save a
huge amount of money on electricity and time.
