History Of Pena Palace-
Pena Palace, located in the picturesque town of
Sintra, has a rich history of Pena Palace that
dates back to the middle ages. Historians believe
that after an apparition of the Virgin Mary, a
chapel dedicated to
3
Our Lady of Pena was built atop the hill. Later
in the 15th century, King Manuel I was drawn to
this chapel and commissioned the construction of
a monastery for the Order of Saint Jerome, which
could accommodate 18 monks. However, lightning
severely damaged the monastery in the 18th
century. Fast forward to the early 19th century,
and King consort Ferdinand II acquired the ruins
of the monastery and the surrounding land to
build a summer residence for the royal family.
For the majority of the 20th century, the
once-bright colors of the palace had faded into
shades of gray. However, in later years, the
Palace underwent a restoration process to bring
back its original vibrant hues of bright yellow
and red. This Palace, which is an iconic symbol
of Portugal's rich history, was recognized as a
World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995,
solidifying its importance in the country's
cultural heritage. Today, the Palace is used to
host various state events by the President of the
Portuguese Republic and other government
officials, adding to its significance as an
important landmark. Facts About Pena Palace-
