Title: Dr. Prasenjit Kr. Roy - Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)

1
What is TESA?
TESA is a type of medical procedure that is
similar to aspiration cytology. This is one of
the advanced techniques of sperm retrieval that
is now used during the ICSI method. The couple
who are facing certain fertility issues due to
poor sperm production can opt for this retrieval
technique for directly getting sperm from the
testis. You can visit an IVF center if you have
queries regarding the TESA method or cost of IVF
in Siliguri.

For Which Patients TESA is Recommended by The
Doctors?
TESA is mostly recommended by doctors for men who
are suffering from non-obstructive or obstructive
azoospermia. This is one of the key causes of
infertility because, in this disorder, the
ejaculate doesnt contain any spermatozoa for
fertilization. The absence of spermatozoa makes
the process of union with the female egg missing
which creates a major barrier while conceiving.

How Does TESA Work?
  • The patient is first given a general anesthesia
  • A butterfly needle is inserted in the region of
the testicular substance and negative pressure is
    used for aspiring fluid
  • The fluid is then checked for the presence of
sperm and healthy sperm cells are extracted from
    it
  • With the help of the ICSI method, a single sperm
will be injected into the egg for fertilization

  • Cons
  • The tunical vessel can get punctured, which may
    cause a hematocele
  • The insertion of the needle through the
testicular tissue can damage seminiferous tubules
that can result in intra-testicular hemorrhage
  • TESA can be less effective for men suffering from
    non-obstructive azoospermia
