2LIVING IN BARKINGSIDE A Revived Urban Centre
Perfect for Nature Lovers and Outdoor Enthusiasts
Barkingside is a suburban town in the London
Borough of Redbridge. It offers all the perks of
suburban living and ample green spaces within a
few miles of Central London. It is a dynamic,
ethnically diverse community very invested in
regenerating and reinventing this lesser-known
area of East London. Offering great access to
public transport and links to the City Centre and
all of Londons major districts, Barkingside also
has a great housing stock at affordable prices,
plenty of parks and recreation grounds, as well
as a wide variety of shopping and dining options.
There is also no shortage of good schools and
medical care units in the area. Barkingside is,
therefore, ideal for young families looking for
an energetic neighborhood to call their home.
3ABOUT THE AREA BARKINGSIDE GUIDE
The suburban town of Barkingside sits 3 miles
north of Ilford Town. Before being included in
the Borough of Redbridge in 1965, Barkingside was
a part of the county of Essex. Its history is
marked by the Holy Trinity Church set up in 1840
and the Barnardo chapel and Barnardo childrens
charity founded in 1866. It hosts an Underground
station in a former Edwardian railway station
site and has a large Jewish population. The urban
development of the area was accelerated by the
arrival of the Great Eastern Railway in 1903. The
current Barkingside Tube station was inaugurated
then as part of the GER branch line running from
Woodford to Ilford via Hainault. It was shut down
temporarily due to World War I from May 1916
until July 1919. Following the 1921 Railways Act,
the Great Eastern Railway became part of the
London North Eastern Railway and part of the
Central Line in 1948. One of the upsides of
living in Barkingside is taking advantage of its
suburban feel and ample green areas while still
being less than an hour away from Charing Cross.
Easy access via the Central Line will take you
directly to Tottenham Court Road station in 45
minutes. London City Airport, Poplar, and Canary
Wharf are also accessible by Central Line to
Stratford and then connection via DLR.
