Title: VOODOO: Magic and Spirituality
1VOODOO Magic and Spirituality
2- THE DOMINANT RELIGION OF HAITI
The Haitian Voodoo is full of different types of
rituals and ceremonies that are conducted. Some
ceremonies or rituals are offered and open to the
public, while others are conducted, by Houngans
(Priests) and Mambos (Priestesses), for private
customers. Unlike the clergy of other
Religions, Houngans and Mambos do not receive a
salary or steady wage. Therefore, most Houngans
and Mambos charge for their services, time, and
materials. While public ceremonies are done free
of charge, rituals directed at helping resolve a
particular persons problems are done on a for
hire basis. Clients commission Vodou priests
and priestesses for all sorts of reasons and to
resolve all sorts of problems and issues. There
are also other ceremonies which a person must pay
a Houngan or Mambo to do on their behalf.
3HAITIAN VOODOO
It is said to be practiced or believed by 80 to
90 percent of Haitians, it is said that there are
two ways a person can die, either by natural
means such as sickness, or by unnatural means
such as murder. Those who died unnatural deaths
were said to have souls that were particularly
vulnerable to the witchcraft of voodoo sorcerers,
who would entrap the souls in bottles or
earthenware jars called zombi astral and use them
to control the undead body, which was referred to
as the zombi cadavre. The bokor (voodoo black
magician)could use these reanimated corpses to do
their bidding, either for benevolent purposes or
for more nefarious things such as toiling
mindlessly in slave labor, attacking enemies, or
carrying out dark magic and curses. Sometimes a
person was turned into a zombie merely as
punishment or as retribution for crossing a
bokor. On occasion, bokors would sell their
zombie creations to other priests.
4HAITIAN VOODOO BELIEFS
- The most basic Tenets and basic beliefs of all
Vodouisants are - Believe in one God, often referred to as Gran Met
(Great Master) - BonDye (Good God).
- Most Vodouisants (practitioners of Vodou) believe
that God does not intercede in human affairs or
is tooo busy to intercede in human affairs. Thus
God created the Lwa (High Level Spirits . . .
more on them in a later lesson), the Ancestors
and the Dead to aid and assist us (humans) in
resolving problems and other issues - Vodouisants serve the Lwa by giving various
rituals, offerings, ceremonies to them. As well
as by observing certain codes and taboos. In
return, the Lwa assist the Vodouisant by
conferring blessings, fixing and resolving the
persons problems, keeping them spiritually and
physically protected, revealing the future, etc.
5VOODOO CEREMONY
The possession of a person by a spirit is done
during a religious ritual and is considered a
sacred act for those who practice Voodoo.
During a Voodoo ceremony, a spirit (Loa) will
enter (ride) the individual. The person being
possessed considers being chosen by the spirit,
to ride him as a horse into the physical world,
to be one of the highest honors that can be
bestowed on him. Drummers begin beating out an
ancient rhythm while others chant. Those
participating in the ritual begin to dance in a
circle, losing themselves to the rhythm of the
drums. As the drum beat increases, so do the
movements of the dancers.
