  • A PAP smear test is a screening test that is used
    to detect abnormal cells in a woman's cervix. It
    is usually recommended as part of routine
    gynecological care for women between the ages of
    21 and 65.
  • It is used to screen cervical cancer in a woman.

  • The test generally involves the collection and
    examination of cells from the cervix region
    (lower and narrow end of the uterus) for the
    existence of abnormal cells leading to cancer.
  • The results of a pap smear test can detect the
    presence of abnormal cells that may be
    precancerous or cancerous. If abnormal cells are
    detected, further testing may be needed to
    determine the appropriate treatment.

  • Cervical inflammations

  • Women with the following risk factors are
    recommended for more-frequent screening tests.
  • Presence of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
    infection
  • History of exposure to Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
  • Weak immune system
  • Detection of precancerous cells on a pap smear
    test
