Description:

An optical tool called a polariscope is used to investigate the polarisation of light. Using a light source before the first filter and an analyzer in front of the second filter, it typically comprises two polarising filters positioned at right angles to one another. The polariscope can provide details about the structure and makeup of materials that impact the polarisation of light traveling through them by observing changes in the brightness and color of the transmitted light. Polariscopes are frequently employed in the study of stress and strain in materials as well as in the domains of materials science, mineralogy, and geology. Visit:- – PowerPoint PPT presentation

1
Polariscope
Polariscope is a scientific instrument used to
study the optical properties of materials. It is
widely used in various industries, including
gemology, plastics, and glass manufacturing.

2
History of Polariscope
Polariscope was invented in the 19th century by
Étienne-Louis Malus, a French physicist. He
discovered the polarization of light in 1808 and
developed the first polariscope in 1810. Since
then, Polariscope has been used extensively in
various fields of science and industry. The
polarized light reflects off the sample and is
then analyzed by the analyzer. This type of
Polariscope is used to study the birefringence of
opaque materials.

Birefringence
and Optical Path
  • Difference
  • Birefringence is the property of materials that
have two different refractive indices for
    polarized light.
  • When polarized light passes through a
birefringent material, it splits into two waves,
each with a different velocity and polarization.
Optical path difference is the difference in the
length of the optical path traversed by the two
waves of polarized light passing through a
    birefringent material. The optical path
    difference determines the interference pattern
    observed through the polariscope.

Types of Polariscope
Transmission Polariscope In transmission
Polariscope, the light source is placed behind
the polarizer, and the sample is placed between
the polarizer and the analyzer. The polarized
light passes through the sample and is then
analyzed by the analyzer. Reflection
Polariscope In reflection Polariscope, the light
source is placed in front of the polarizer, and
the sample is placed in contact with the
analyzer. The polarized light reflects off the
sample and is then analyzed by the analyzer. This
type of Polariscope is used to study the
birefringence of opaque materials.
