  • Developmental disabilities are conditions that
    affect a person's physical, learning, or behavior
    abilities. They often begin during a person's
    developmental period and usually last through
    their lifetime.
  • People with developmental disabilities can have a
    range of problems including sensory issues,
    behavioral or conduct disorders, and even genetic
    or chromosome abnormalities.

Youth with Special Needs

  • Youth With Special Needs Bay Area are able to
    receive the additional resources they need
    through Medicaid or other state-based programs,
    some may not have access to these services. In
    these cases, the Family Center can help connect
    families to resources.
  • Parents and caregivers of children with special
    health care needs can call the Family Center to
    request assistance with finding services,
    navigating state and federal systems, or making
    appointments for their child. They can also
    request a free health screening.

  • There are a variety of community-based agencies
    in the State of Michigan that provide services to
    children with special health care needs and their
    families. These services range from counseling to
    physical and occupational therapy to behavioral
    health and more.
  • In addition, many public schools and preschools
    have specialized programs for children with
    special health care needs. These programs can
    provide additional services, such as extra time
    to study or a more structured learning
    environment.

    recognizes teachers who are making an
    extraordinary impact on the lives of children
    with special needs. The winner of the award is
    recognized as a role model and speaks for all
    teachers statewide.
  • Her passion for learning and teaching, along with
    her energy level, drive her to continually
    improve the quality of instruction and student
    success. She is committed to providing the
    social-emotional support, rigorous demand,
    personal warmth and professionalism her students
    need to succeed.
  • During her first year of teaching, Taylor
    transitioned Wenonah Elementary School from a
    resource-based setting to an inclusive education
    environment. Her innovative and effective
    instructional practice has helped her to
    successfully teach a diverse group of students
    and achieve high rates of student growth.

Down Syndrome Program
  • A key step in transitioning is choosing the
    appropriate service for each individuals needs.
    For some, this may mean day-to-day support to
    help them with their daily activities or more
    advanced counseling and specialized therapy.
  • Early Intervention These services are designed to
    address delays in physical, cognitive, language
    and social development that can occur as a result
    of Down syndrome. They can begin any time after
    birth but are recommended as soon as possible.
  • They typically include a speech therapist and
    physical therapist. The therapist meets with the
    child two to four times per month to monitor the
    progress of their development.
  • Down Syndrome Program Oakland will need these
    services, they can make an important difference
    in a childs overall progress and development.

Autism Program

  • Autism is a developmental disability that affects
    the way the brain works. It can cause difficulty
    in learning, communication, and social
    interaction. It can also result in severe
    behavioral challenges. Children, teens and adults
    with autism can be helped by many different
    programs and services.
  • The Autism Program provides education and
    socialization in a small, secure environment for
    students with an autism spectrum diagnosis.
    Designed to meet the individual cognitive, social
    and communication needs of students through
    research-based models, this 611 classroom (6
    students, 1 teacher and 1 teaching assistant) is
    staffed with trained professionals who use a
    variety of instructional methods.

  • Special education teachers, speech therapists and
    other professional staff assist students in
    developing communication, social skills, and
    independent living skills. Various strategies are
    used, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA),
    Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS),
    and other techniques.
  • This is an intensive residential and day school
    for students with autism, who are diagnosed with
    a wide range of other intellectual or
    developmental disabilities. Its curriculum is
    based on the principles of applied behavior
    analysis and emphasizes cognitive, social and
    emotional development for these children.
  • The Autism Program provides residential and day
    services for children with autism and other
    disabilities, aged 5 to 21 years old. The
    services include educational, therapy,
    recreational and social activities, employment
    training and support, home and community based
    supports, and vocational training.
