4INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
- Saul was a Jew, a tribe of ________ , born
at __________ in Cilicia in Asia Minor, which is
present day Turkey. He was given the Jewish name
______. His Roman name was ______. His parents
were originally Jewish but later, as foreigners
in the Roman Empire, they acquired Roman
citizenship. This made Paul to have dual
citizenship ________ and _________.
5 Paul was a Roman citizen. Roman
citizenship enabled one to enjoy certain
privileges. These are (1) No molestation and
flogging when arrested. (2) Fair trial. (3)
Opportunity to appeal to the Emperor (Caesar) if
trial was not fair.
6 When Paul realized on an occasion, that
he was not getting fair trial, he used his Roman
citizenship to appeal to Caesar.
7 Tarsus, where Paul was born, was famous
for its fine schools. But Paul did not attend any
of them. He was brought up and educated in
Jerusalem to study under Gamaliel, the great
teacher.
8 He was a very brilliant student of
Jewish law, tradition and religion. He was able
to speak several languages such as Hebrew, Greek
and Aramaic. (The Holy Bible was written in these
three languages.) It was also
possible that he spoke Latin, the language of
Rome.
9 His father was a strict Pharisee who
trained and encouraged him to be bold, diligent
and obedient always.
10 Paul became a faithful defender of the
Jewish religion after his graduation from the
synagogue school and college at Jerusalem. Paul
returned to Tarsus after his studies in
Jerusalem. He worked in the family business of
tent-making.

15THE CONVERSION OF SAUL (ACTS 9 1 -20)
Conversion is the process by which we change from
one religion to another. This change usually
results from some experiences in our lives. Paul
was converted from Judaism (the religion of the
Jews) to Christianity as a result of his
encounter with Jesus Christ on the road to
Damascus. (Write a note on Sauls conversion)
16CONVERSION OF SAUL
17REACTIONS TO THE CONVERSION OF SAUL
- Acts 920-31.
- Immediately Saul was converted to
Christianity, he started preaching to the Jews at
Damascus in the synagogue about Jesus Christ that
He is the Son of God.
18 The people there were surprised because
they knew Paul as a man who wreaked havoc in
Jerusalem on those who believed on the Lord. The
Christians were happy because God had changed him
but the Jews were displeased and were seeking to
kill him.

20ATTITUDE OF CHRISTIANS TOWARDS PERSECUTORS
- In two sentences each, what should be
Christians attitude towards persecutors/during
persecution? - 1. Matt. 543-48
- 2. John 1518-25
- 3. Matt 1016-26
21 Christians are to see persecution as a test
of their faith in Jesus. They were to rejoice
since such was their own share of Christs
suffering, so that they might be glad when the
glory of Jesus would be revealed. They are to
pray for their persecutors, endure persecution
and relocate when necessary.

23PAULS FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY
After Pauls conversion to Christianity, he began
to preach in Damascus that Jesus was the Son of
God. One day, when the Church was praying and
fasting, the Holy Spirit ordered that __________
and __________ should be set apart for a special
job He had for them.
24 This was a direct instruction that the two
people should be sent out to preach the good news
about Jesus Christ to the Gentiles. Paul,
Barnabas and __________ left Antioch of Syria
for the port of Seleucia under the guidance of
the Holy Spirit.
25 From there they sailed to ________.
Their first point of call was _________ where
they entered the Synagogue of the Jews and
preached the gospel. When they arrived Paphos,
they met a Proconsul of the Island named
_________ who invited Paul and Barnabas to his
house.
26 He was eager to hear the word of God,
but a certain Jewish magician known as _______ or
Elymas in Greek language was urging the Proconsul
to disregard their message.
27ACTIVITY
- From Acts 139-11, What was Pauls reaction to
Elymas the sorcerer and what happened afterwards?
28 When the Proconsul saw what had
happened, he believed in the Lord. ACTIVITY Mentio
n ten more cities Paul visited during his first
missionary journey.
29MORE CITIES PAUL VISITED
- 1. Perga in Pamphylia (John Mark left Paul and
Barnabas and returned to Jerusalem) - 2. Paul had his first recorded speech (sermon) in
Antioch of Pisidia. He preached to the Jews and
godly Gentiles in the Synagogue on the Sabbath
day during the service.
303. They went into the Synagogue of the Jews in
Iconium and preached so convincingly that many
Jews and Gentiles believed. But a few Jews who
did not believe incited the Gentiles to join them
and organise rebellion against Paul and Barnabas.
They however fled to Lystra when they heard they
would be stoned.
314. Paul and Barnabas continued preaching in
Lystra. They healed a man who had been lame from
his mothers womb. The people who witnessed the
miracle mistook the Apostles for Greek gods.
Barnabas they called Zeus and Paul being the
chief speaker, Hermes.
32 The Apostles however prevented the priest
of the temple of Zeus from offering sacrifices to
the gods and Paul preached about the only true
God and Creator who alone is to be worshipped.
Some people in the city (Lystra) believed but
others were roused to rebellion by the Jews who
came from Antioch and Iconium.
33 The people then stoned Paul and dragged
him out of the city leaving him half dead. But
some believers gathered around him and restored
him to life. So, Paul and his companions went
back to Lystra and left for Derbe the next day,
preached the gospel there and made many disciples
of the Lord.
34 THE CHURCH COUNCIL AT JERUSALEM.
After Pauls first missionary journey, many
aliens joined the church which was originally
confined to the Jewish Christians. The Jerusalem
council was the earliest church convention or
synod held by the apostles in order to look into
the problems affecting members of the church.
35 The elders of the church, the
apostles and teachers in Jerusalem met with the
representatives of the Gentile church of Antioch,
under the chairmanship of James, the brother of
Jesus. They heard the views of various people and
pointed out that the yoke of law should not be
imposed on the Gentiles who newly embraced
Christianity.
36 James, the presiding leader
then summed up by pronouncing the verdict and the
decision of the council that the Gentiles
Christians should not be troubled with the Mosaic
laws of circumcision.
37-
- Rather, they should abstain from
four things (mention them) - 1) what was sacrificed to idols
- 2) unchastity (sexual immorality)
- 3) strangled meat
- 4) eating blood
38 These apostolic decisions to the
Gentiles did not replace salvation for salvation
is only possible by faith. The Council sent Judas
(Barsabbas) and Silas to accompany Paul and
Barnabas to the Gentiles Churches of Antioch,
Syria and Cilicia to convey the decision.
39CONFLICTS RESOLUTION As people mix,
relate and interact, there is bound to be
conflict or disagreement but such should be
handled in a mature way with the wisdom of God. A
disagreement led to the peaceful separation of
Paul and Barnabas after their first missionary
journey.
40 Another disagreement led to the first church
council and the issues were settled amicably.
Therefore when issues arise among us it should be
settled peacefully with the wisdom of God.
41ACTIVITY
- Mention five wrong and right ways each of
conflict resolution.
42 43PAULS SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY. ACTS 1313,
1536-41
- After they had stayed in Antioch of
Syria for a while, Paul told Barnabas that they
should visit the churches they established during
their first missionary journey.
44 ________ wanted John Mark to go with
them but Paul refused because John Mark left them
at ______ in Pamphilia without finishing the ____
missionary journey with them.
45 This led to a sharp disagreement
between them (Paul and Barnabas) hence, _________
took John Mark with him and sailed off to _______
while Paul took _____ with him and went to Syria
and Cilicia, strengthening the Churches.
46ACTIVITY Find out and list ten cities
Paul visited during his second missionary journey.
471. Derbe 2. Lystra (Paul met Timothy a Greek i.e.
Gentile but his mother, Jewess. Paul circumcised
and integrated him into their evangelistic
team) 3. Troas (He had a vision where a man told
him to come over to Macedonia and help them)
484. Philippi (They met Lydia a seller of purple
goods from the city of Thyatira. Also, a girl
with the spirit of divination fortune telling
was delivered. Paul and Silas were later
imprisoned in Philippi)
495. Paul visited Athens which was full of idols
and there was an altar with inscription to an
unknown god. He encountered the Stoics and
Epicurean philosophers who later invited him to
Mars hill known as the Areopagus where he
addressed them on the issue of the unknown god.
Two people Dionysius the Areopagite and Damaris
were converted as a result of Pauls address.
50DIGNITY OF LABOUR AND OBEDIENCE TO CONSTITUTED
AUTHORITY
- This principle stated that all
people must be treated with equal respect. No job
must be considered as superior to another and any
job a person does should not be discriminated
against whether it is rooted in physical work or
mental labour.
51 In Genesis, we can see that God
worked when He created the world. In addition,
work is not Gods way of punishing us. In fact,
He blesses us with the ability to work so that
we can honour Him. God put man in the Garden of
Eden to work it, take care of it and till it.
52 Apostle Paul wrote to the
Thessalonians on the dignity of labour. He
rebuked those in the Church who lived in
idleness, for they were not living according to
the laid down rules of the Church. Pauls
teaching on dignity of labour is that laziness
and indolence must not be condoned. Hence,
Christians must be productive.
53QUESTION
- Who are constituted authorities?
- How can constituted authorities be obeyed?
54RESPONSE
- Constituted authority refers to an
individual, group or body vested with legitimate
power to carry out specific duties for the common
good of a group or society.
55 Constituted authorities are
responsible for the smooth running of the
society. They ensure that people live in peace
with one another, ensure orderliness in the
state, help to settle dispute in the society and
help to make policies and decisions to achieve
set goals.
56 All constituted authorities get their
power from the constitution. They are empowered
by the constitution to exercise power and their
powers are limited by the constitution. The most
obvious example of constituted authorities
include President, Police officers, Governors,
Senators, etc.
57 The major aim of Pauls letter to
Romans and Ephesians was to establish what should
be the essential Christian lifestyle in all ages.
Apostle Pauls letter to the Romans says Let
every person be subject to the governing
authorities for there is no authority except from
God and those authorities that exist have been
instituted by God.
58 In Romans 131-7, Paul wrote to Gentile
believers in Rome to obey the God-ordained
authority of the synagogue rulers in Rome.
59 60THE GROWTH OF THE CHURCH
- The Church is the Bride of Christ
through which God reconciles man to Himself. The
church is not a building, the venue nor the
structure BUT Christians as the Body of Christ.
61- The first missionaries that came to
Nigeria were Europeans from the Roman Catholic
Church. Their initial attempt to preach the
gospel to the people failed because of - harsh/hostile weather condition
- language barrier
- hostility of the people/ chiefs
- traditional religious beliefs of the people.
62 The chiefs were afraid that if
their indigenes become Christian, they would no
longer follow their traditional religion. CHURCH
