What is Bypass Surgery?
Bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery
bypass surgery, is a surgical procedure that is
performed to improve blood flow to the heart. The
procedure involves creating a new pathway for
blood to bypass a blocked or narrowed artery in
the heart. This is typically done by using a
blood vessel from another part of the body, such
as the leg or chest, to create a bypass around
the blocked artery. Bypass surgery is typically
recommended for people who have severe blockages
in one or more of their coronary arteries and are
at high risk for a heart attack.
