tune of your frequency you have to change where
your attention is focused. Focus your attention
on where you want your point of attraction to be.
All day, every day, from now on!! That is how we
change our circumstances and our life! All

feelings, and beliefs. So if you want something
other than what is happening then you have got to
look at the other that you would rather have
happening. It won't change instantly, but you can
bet your shinny Henie that the more you put your
attention on what you want instead of what's
happening, the closer you will be to that
happening. It's about consistency and it's about
consistency. Most of us spend a little bit of
time each day focusing on what we want, and the
rest of the day letting our thoughts roam all
over the place to all kinds of "what if"
scenarios. Well there is no what if! You are the
creator of your experience! Nothing outside of
you creates for you. You put your attention on
stuff, and You create what you put your attention
on! It isn't sometimes, it isn't haphazard or
random. You create what you give your attention
to 100 of the time. So now is the time to begin
to think on purpose. If you want change you
cannot let your attention waver. You have got to
affirm to yourself that you are the creator of
your experience. That no one else creates for
you. You will get what you focus on. And you now
choose to focus on the most benevolent

first time many years ago - when a family friend
paid us a surprise visit. We were having an
intense discussion about our issues, and it was
then that he told us about the law of attraction.

Even if the law of attraction is largely
considered a pseudoscience, there are many out
there who ardently believe in the concept,
including my family friend. He believed in it
because he had ample success with the law of
attraction.
For instance, his daughter (let's call her
Annie) was having an issue finding the right
partner. She searched all over - registering on
dating sites, meeting people -but still, love
seemed to elude her. This was a worrying factor
for all. Her family wanted to see her happy. She
felt incomplete without a partner. He then
suggested his favourite book - "The Law of
Attraction The Basics of the Teachings of
Abraham" - by Esther Hicks and Jerry Hicks. "It
worked for me, he said. "You should try it too.
Annie's Creative Visualizations
Annie read the book and decided to use the power
of her subconscious mind to manifest things that
she coveted. In this case, love. She started
thinking daily

about getting married to the right guy, right
before sleep. She visualized the whole process -
the dress she was wearing, getting married in the
presence of loved ones, the whole event with its
decor. She pictured every minute detail, exactly
the way she wanted her wedding to be.
This is a manifestation technique followed in a
lot of law of attraction books - to visualize
what you seek. As you sleep, thinking these
thoughts, they make their way to your
subconscious mind. The belief is that when your
goals are deeply set in your mind, you work
towards them, without even realizing it. The more
you think about your goal (in an optimistic way),
the more you subconsciously work towards it, and
the closer you are to achieving your dreams.
It worked for Annie - she got married in 6
months.
Optimism is Key
I say you have to be optimistic because as per
the law of attraction, the universe considers
even negative thoughts as a dream to be fulfilled.
When you give all your energy to a thought like
"I do not want this to happen to me, you invite
that very incident into your life. Why? Because
you are giving your whole attention to it. The
universal energy and the law of attraction does
not understand "I do not want and "I do want.
It takes into context the whole sentence and
gives you what you are focusing on.
How many of us have gone "I knew this would
happen! when something bad happens to us? The
irony is that, according to the law of
attraction, we were subconsciously inviting that
very incident into our lives by constantly
thinking and worrying about it. This means, it is
not your 6th sense or instinct that predicted
this event, but it is your own thoughts that
invited this dreaded event into your life.
Annie thought only positive thoughts. She
steadfastly believed in her dream, like it
already happened, and the law of attraction
worked for her.
You must be familiar with this ever-famous
quote by Paulo Coelho. When you want
something, all the universe conspires in helping
you to achieve it. Each thing has to transform

Attraction Story Begins Here..
After this intense discussion on the law of
attraction and the power of manifestation, I was
curious. I wanted to know more. I got the "The
Law of Attraction The Basics of the Teachings of
Abraham" book by Esther Hicks and Jerry Hicks. I
bought 2 other books based on the same concept -
"The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and "The Power of
the Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. I was
mesmerized by the examples, philosophy, and the
thought process behind it. I am all about
positivity, and this book endorsed it.
I decided to give it a try. I was ready to send
my "signals to the universe. So I decided on a
couple of goals, one after the other, to test out
the law of attraction.
Goal 1 I want the markets to rise and my
mutual fund portfolio to do well.
Manifestation technique used Think
passionately about the end-result like it has
already happened - "The market has risen. My
portfolio is doing incredibly well. I am making
so much money. I am rich.
Result I guess I thought about it so
passionately that the universe could not handle
it - because the market crashed for 6 days in a
row after that.
Goal 2 (a simpler one) I want it to stop
raining before I go out.
Affirmations used Think passionately about the
end-result - "The rain has stopped. I can now go
out and finish off some chores.
Result The rain did stop! I used this a couple
of times successfully. I started wondering if the
law of attraction worked only on rainfall.

Goal 3 (coz, why not?) I am living a happy life
with my partner.
Affirmations used "My partner and I are
enjoying a beautiful life together. His mom likes
me now. Things are fine. Everything is A-OK.
Result Again, too much passion. I empathize
with the universe that has to deal with all this
raging, passionate energy of mine. I and my
partner split up soon after.
Goal 4 - I am not yet sure.
I am still thinking about it considering the
mixed signals I am getting from the universe by
following the law of attraction as closely as
possible. I now feel like we, the universe
and I, are in a complicated, hot-cold
relationship. Sometimes the law of attraction
works, sometimes it doesnt.
I want to tell the universe - "Its not you,
its me - but then that would just be a big,
terrible lie.
So does the law of attraction really work?
Not for me. But maybe your manifestation power
and creative visualizations are better than mine?
A better method would be to list out all the
things you want (like a grocery list) and hand it
over to the universe (say it in your mind,
because you can't technically hand it over - but
you know that already). Let the universe decide
what is most healthy for you. You might not
end up getting what you want, but what is best
for you. The universe is kind that way.

Haha yes, the Indian markets are doing well
right now ) Maybe there was a transmission
delay? I am not complaining!
You might be right about focusing on the bad
things about my partner. I guess I was. My want
totally contradicted with how I felt. A lot of
negative feelings.

Thank you for commenting, Vanita. I have read
The Secret too. In all these books, they mention
that everything (even the extreme negatives)
happens because of the person's own negative
thoughts. I find this is a little unfair because
no one wants to invite ugly things into their
lives. If our own thoughts define the way things
happen, maybe we can negate these negative
thoughts, by thinking they won't happen. A
counteractive thought.

Nice article.
When I first came across the "Law of
Attraction, I instantly found a resemblance to
the Bible quote "Ask, and you shall receive".
Believe what you have asked in prayer, and it
will be done. So, I was sold on. Yes, it took
time for making things happen, but it did.
Anyway, just curious, aren't the markets doing
well? (I presume you are in India). Because of
you, it worked for us too. )

Too much passion is the need for Law of
Attraction. Not just saying or writing down but
also feeling it. So, you just have to check if
you were asking for a partner or focused on what
was not good about the partner. Either way, it is
an interesting and exciting journey! Have

Kalpana. Enjoyed reading it. Couple of years
back, an elderly fan and well-wisher of mine - a
very adorable gentle lady - had brought the book
- "The Secret to me, with strong recommendations
that I read it and get help to overcome all the
troubles that I might be facing or I am likely to
come across .... I had read some pages, perhaps
and then, I had to return it as she wanted to
share it with someone else .... I do believe
in the power of positivity, optimism and
determination. But, I am not sure how well the
methods and concepts given in such books work.
However, I am pretty sure the Universe is much
more Intelligent and Gracious than what the book
seems to be saying - .... the Universe considers
our negative thoughts as our aspirations and
bestows them upon us .... Such statements raise a
valid question -Do the victims of murder or any
such heinous crimes "attract" their misfortunes ?
In that case, the sole responsibility of all
their sufferings would be on their own "negative
thoughts" and the culprit would be just a puppet
of the victim's negative thoughts ....
The Laws of Universe are perhaps much more subtle
and more dynamic than how we reason them out and
understand them.

Nice and interesting read regarding the law of
attraction.
There can be different opinions about this.
Personally, I have seen that, as we mature, there
is a change in perception. From obsession to
understanding and accepting things, as they are.

Yes, probably. There are so many concepts that
contradict each other. The Law of Attraction
tells you not to have any negative thoughts
whereas meditation techniques tell you to embrace
all thoughts (but not get absorbed). Ultimately,
it is about choosing the technique that resonates

The concept of positive thinking reminds me of
the book I read a long time ago "Think and Grow
Rich" by Napoleon Hill. It's all about the theory
you talk about in this article.
I, however, do believe a burning desire for
something and actually living it out as if it is
already with you does work in getting you what
you want. The failure, if any, is one's own lack
of perseverance and not of the concept.
