The Story

• This label was created by two avid handloom
  enthusiasts Nirupama Singh Sharma and Anjana
  Bhamra. Nirupama, the Co-Founder and Creative
  Director at The Saffron Saga love working closely
  with weavers and artisans from across the country
  to create their well-appreciated collection of
  exquisite Sarees, Kaftans, Suits, Dresses,
  Blouses and edgy Loungewear. These two passionate
  women are constantly striving to make handlooms
  popular and bring authentic apparel for women.  
• This narrative of their label, The Saffron Saga,
  speaks loudly about the story of two women
  striving for financial independence, and
  empowerment, not only for themselves but also for
  the artisans as well. 
• Nirupama bade adieu to the corporate world in
  2009, at a time when she had already moved up the
  ladder to work as a Marketing and Communications
  Head with a renowned telecom giant. Given family
  circumstances, she had to move to Jabalpur,
  Madhya Pradesh. The work-oriented professional
  that she is, staying at home wasnt ever ideal
  for her after working for more than 15 in various
  sectors like Telecom, Media, BPO industries.
  After her youngest child was five, the diligent
  professional felt a rather restless urge to get
  back into the professional field. But to find a
  job suitable to her expertise in a place like
  Jabalpur was rather hard. Thats when she met
  Anjana, who seemed to be in the same mindset as
  she was, thereby laying the foundation of The
  Saffron Saga partnership in the year 2016.
  Anjana, who is a go-getter has been a
  restauranteur and a marketing ex-corporate woman.

The Story contd

• Fabrics and creativity have been the passion of
  both these women, and they make sure that their
  passion speaks through their work. The project
  started small, but they built it daily with
  arduous hard work, which involved taking a small
  loan from the bank, paying back the EMIs and
  having no income for some time. The Saffron Saga
  survived several problems in the initial years,
  but they emerged even stronger.
• Cut to the present date, the label has already
  found a strong foothold when it comes to handloom
  lovers and this energetic duo continues to make
  it better. She and Anjana have been written about
  in leading news publications in the country as
  well. They aspire to have a - for the women, of
  the women, and by the women label that can
  empower and inspire underprivileged female
  artisans who often find it difficult to etch out
  a solid livelihood, all the while making
  handlooms as popular as they possibly can.

KAMAYANI - BLUE BLACK BAGH BLOCK PRINT MULBERRY
SILK SAREE

• The beauty of centuries old Bagh block prints
  from Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh is
  unparalleled. This ages old technique started by
  the Khatri community has some very peculiar
  processes involved in the technique which make
  this art form unique. The very reason that this
  belt situated on the banks of river Bagh
  developed as the hub of this style of printing is
  that the water from the river Bagh had those
  chemical properties that enhanced the sheen and
  the colours of the natural, vegetable or organic
  dyes used originally for the prints. Flowing
  water is a must for this technique and the river
  provides the abundance that otherwise was scarce
  in the region. Tamarind seeds are used to make
  the paste of colour dyes. The other interesting
  ingredients used in multiple processes are the
  flowers of Dhawadi or Dhawda that are used
  along with alizarin in boiling to fix colours.
  Also, goat faeces or droppings are used in the
  process.
• The natural Black in Bagh prints comes from
  rusted iron nails or scrap mixed with Jaggery.
  Red is made from alum roots. Other colours like
  Indigo, Khaki, Yellow etc are made using Infogo
  leaves, Dhawdi flowers and Anar Chhilka or
  Pomegranate rind. With the passage of time
  chemical dyes too have started to be used in this
  printing process to add variety of colours on

KALINDI-GREEN NANDANA HAND BLOCK PRINTED COTTON
SAREE

• Nandna Block Printing technique is more than 300
  years old art that was practised in Tarapur
  District of Madhya Pradesh. This beautiful art
  got dwindled gradually. Revival of this beautiful
  technique of printing that involves usage of
  purely vegetable dyes and blocks or bootas that
  have names as gorgeous as they look, has made
  these prints a sought after possession by the
  connoisseurs of tasteful dressing.
• "Naandna" derives its name from "Naand" which
  means a huge earthen pot, which is used to
  prepare the organic dyes for colouring the
  fabric. The bootas have names like " Champakali",
  "Dholamaru", "Mirchiboota" and are very specific
  to this style of block printing. The Green colour
  that can be seen in these sarees is derived from
  Pomegranate Rind or "Anar Chhilka" in hindi and
  hence these are also called by the same name.
  Featured Naandna Block Printed Mul Cotton Sarees
  enhanced with hand work embroidery and handmade
