3 Architecture
Architecture, as opposed to construction-related
skills, is the art and technique of designing and
building. Architecture is a practise that
satisfies both functional and expressive needs,
and as a result, it serves both utilitarian and
aesthetic goals. These two ends can be
distinguished from one another but they cannot be
separated, and the relative importance given to
each can differ significantly. Every society,
whether it is settled or nomadic, has a spatial
relationship to the natural world and to other
societies, and as a result, the structures it
creates can tell us a lot about its environment,
including its climate and weather, its history,
its rituals, its artistic sensibility, and many
other aspects of daily life. A work of
architecture can be identified from other built
structures by three characteristics (1) its
suitability for use by humans in general and its
adaptability to specific human activities (2)
the stability and permanence of the work's
construction and (3) the ability to communicate
experience and ideas through its form.
Architecture must adhere to each of these
requirements. The first and third change in
relative importance depending on the social
function of a building, but the second remains
constant. Communication is less significant when
the function is primarily utilitarian, as in a
factory. Utility is a secondary consideration if
the function is primarily expressive, as in a
monumental tomb. Utility and communication may be
equally important in some structures, such as
churches and city halls.
