Sector How did cloth manufacturing evolve in
India? Historical evidence suggests that the
weaving and spinning of cotton existed during the
Harappan Civilisation, about 4000 years back.
Studies indicate that large quantities of silk
from northern parts of India were traded with
western countries through the silk route in
China. The clothing sector kept thriving during
the Mughal empire and the British Raj in India as
Bengal and Gujrat emerged as the main production
hubs. Cotton yarn and jute continue to be the
mainstay of the industry with artificial fibres,
such as nylon and polyester entering the market

  the manufacturing of cloth includes dyeing,
  printing, and other cloth preparation

  77000 domestic manufacturers, exporters, and
  subcontractors engaged in the production of
  apparel.
• Composite mills These are relatively large
  set-ups where spinning, weaving, and at times
  fabricating are done under one roof.

What is the present state of the Indian clothing
industry? After agriculture, textile is Indias
foremost industry employing around 4.5 crore
people. There are more than 35 Lakhs handloom
workers spread across the country. The sector
contributes nearly 14 of the total industrial
production and accounts for about 30 of total
exports. Indias clothing industry is growing at
a CAGR of 10 and is expected to touch 190

bales of cotton during the production season of
2021-22. Exports of textile and apparel stood at

inaugurated the Center of Excellence for
Khadi (CoEK) at Delhi to produce innovative
fabrics and garments for the domestic and
overseas market. A total of 1.62 billion
was allocated to the textile industry in
