Electrical Stimulation and TENS
In physical therapy, electrical stimulation and
TENS (transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular
stimulation) are sometimes used to assist reduce
discomfort around injured tissue. The gate
hypothesis and the opiate theory are two theories
on how stimulation works. Muscle contraction can
also be achieved with other types of electrical
stimulation. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation
(NMES) is a technique for assisting injured
muscles in "relearning" how to function properly.
