Roof Repair Tips
Find and Fix a Leaking Roof
2
Overview
  • A leaky roof is most likely the source of water
stains that stretch across ceilings or run down
    walls.
  • The difficult aspect is locating the leak the
roof leak repair is typically simple.
  • We'll teach you how to locate and fix most common
types of leaky roofs using easy techniques.

3
How to Find Roof Leaks
  • If you're looking for a leak, start by looking
upward from the spots on the roof.
  • Roof penetrations are the first item to look for.
The most prevalent source of leaks is items that
    breach the roof.
  • In reality, even on older roofs, leaks in open
sections of continuous shingles are uncommon.
Plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers, and
anything else that protrudes through the roof are
    examples of penetrations.

4
A Small Leak's Solution
  • Some roof leaks are difficult to find. Water may
appear on a ceiling far away from the source of
    the leak.
  • Push the insulation aside and search for flow
marks on the plastic vapour barrier between the
drywall and the attic insulation if your ceiling
    has one.
  • Water frequently leaks through vapour barrier
gaps, such as at ceiling light fixtures.

5
Fix Plumbing Vent Boots
  • Plumbing vent boots come in a variety of
materials, including pure plastic, plastic and
metal, and even two-piece metal versions.
  • Check for fractures in plastic bases and damaged
seams in metal bases. Examine the rubber boot
that surrounds the pipe next. This can decay away
or be torn, enabling water to enter the house
    through the pipe.

6
Roof Vents How to Repair Them
  • Inspect plastic roof vents for cracked housings
and metal roof vents for damaged seams.
  • You might be tempted to just apply caulk to the
problem, but it isn't a long-term solution. Other
than fixing the broken vents, there isn't much
that can be done. Look for pulled or missing
nails at the bottom border of the base.

7
Fix Walls and Dormers
  • The shingled surface isn't necessarily where
    water enters.
  • Wind-driven rain frequently enters via cracks and
knotholes in siding, particularly around windows,
between corner boards and siding, and through
    cracks and knotholes in siding.
  • Water can drip down and into the roof through the
many holes in dormer walls. Between the corner
boards and the window edges and siding, caulk
might be old, damaged, or even absent.

8
Leaks Around Brick Chimneys
  • Around brick chimneys, all kinds of awful things
may happen. In fact, there are far too many for
    this article to address.
  • If the flashing surrounding chimneys is
galvanised steel, it can rust through, especially
at the 90-degree curve at the bottom.
  • Simply slipping new flashing beneath the old
rusty stuff is a fast but rather long-term remedy.
