2Joshua Michael Homme
Josh Homme is an American songwriter and lead
guitarist, and singer of a band known to the
world as Queens of the Stone Age. Though this
band gave him ultimate fame and popularity, it
wasn't the only band he founded and became a big
part of the same. Josh Homme has a number of
bands to his name.
3When he was fourteen years of age, Josh Homme
formed a heavy metal rock band with his friends
from school, Brant Bjork and John Garcia, in 1987
in a Palm Desert. He was the lead guitarist of
the band. The band Kyuss successfully amassed a
sect following where people drove for hours in
the desert, found isolated places, and plugin
generators for stage performances. These events
have become popular as generator parties. Among
rock subcultures, these became the urban legend.
4 If to talk about the history of the band, it was
formed in 1987 under the name of Katzenjammer,
which means 'hangover' in German. Then, the band
eventually decides to go for the name of Sons of
Kyuss. Brant Bjork selected the name from the
undead monster found in the role-playing game
Advanced Dungeons Dragons. The band recorded
their legendary debut EP in 1989. It was their
only release featuring Chris Cockrell. The band
recruited Nick Oliveri in 1990 that previously
played guitar in Katzenjammer, replacing Cockrell
on bass and then shortened their name to Kyuss.
5Kyuss became famous for their groove-oriented,
down-tuned, and heavy music. Chris Gross was the
band's mentor and helped them sign a label.
Besides, Gross also produces them exclusively to
preserve their sound. At that time of the band's
singing, Josh Homme was younger than eighteen, so
his parents the contract on his behalf.
6- Later, Kyuss released four albums, namely,
Welcome to Sky Valley, Blues for the Red Sun, And
the Circus Leaves Town, and Wretch. Out of these,
the final three were efforts produced by Chris
Gross and are cited as the foundation of the
stoner rock genre of the 1990s.
7- Shortly after the breakup of the band, Josh Homme
toured with Screaming Trees as the rhythm
guitarist and started work on the ongoing series,
The Desert Sessions. A transitional split EP was
released in December 1997 features three songs,
"Flip the Phase," "Fatso Forgot," and "Into the
Void" by Kyuss. The series also contains three
songs by Josh Homme's popular band Queens of the
Stone Age, "Spiders Vinegaroons," "Born to
Hula," and "If Only Everything." - In 1998, Josh Homme and Hernandez formed the band
Queens of the Stone Age and recruited Oliveri on
bass after their debut album was completed. -
