Large span structure

Shanghai Stadium
The Shanghai Gymnasium is located in the
southwestern area of Shanghai, opposite the
famous Huating Hotel. It is now called Shanghai
Grand Stage. It was completed and used in 1975.
The main hall is circular, 33 meters high, with a
roof grid span of 110 meters in diameter, and can
accommodate 18,000 spectators. After renovation
in 1999, a double-deck stage of 1,250 square
meters was added with advanced facilities. It is
currently the first theater-style gymnasium in
China. It can undertake various theatrical
performances, large-scale sports competitions,
assemblies, large-scale exhibitions, etc., and
the audience capacity can still be maintained at
about 12,000.

Structural system
The space frame structure is a circle with
a diameter of 124.6 meters and is supported by 36
pillars evenly distributed on the circumference
of the 110 meter diameter circle. The support
point is cantilevered by 7.30 meters, and there
is a gas tower in the middle of the grid. The
height of the grid is 6 meters, the middle arch
is 2.5 meters, and it is composed of more than 1

Space Truss Structure

    structure. The clear span of the hall is 40
    meters and the outer span is 54 meters. The
    reconstruction design of Shanghai Cultural Square
    adopts the steel structure spherical joint flat
    slab grid frame, which was completed in 1970.
    The New Orleans Gymnasium, built in 1976, has a
    circular plane diameter of 207.3 meters and is
    the largest steel grid structure building in the
    world today.
