2Vaginismus is a condition involving a muscle
spasm in the pelvic floor muscles. It can make it
painful, difficult, or impossible to have sexual
intercourse, to undergo a gynecological exam, and
to insert a tampon.
3What are the different types of vaginismus?
- There are two main types of vaginismus.
- Primary This is when a woman has had pain every
time something entered her vagina, including a
penis (called penetrative sex), or when shes
never been able to insert anything into her
vagina. Its also called lifelong vaginismus. - Secondary This is when a woman has had sex
without pain before, but then it becomes
difficult or impossible. Its also called
acquired vaginismus.
4What are the symptoms of vaginismus?
- Painful sex (dyspareunia) is often the first sign
of vaginismus. The pain happens only with
penetration. It usually goes away after
withdrawal, but not always. - Symptoms of vaginismus include
- Not being able to have penetrative sex or insert
a tampon at all - Fear of pain or sex
- Loss of sexual desire
5How are vaginismus diagnosed?
Vaginal dilatation is required. Your doctor will
decide your treatment plan.
