    hearing ability.
  • Microscopic and endoscopic approaches are
    utilized for tympanoplasty.
  • This activity reviews the indication for
    tympanoplasty and treatment options it
highlights the role of the interprofessional team
in evaluating and treating tympanic membrane
    perforations.

4
Symptoms
  • Pain in the ear
  • Bleeding from the ear
  • Fluid leakage and discharge from the ear
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea and vomiting

5
Causes
  • Infections that cause the eardrum to burst.
ventilation (ear) tubes that fall out or are
removed. injury, such as puncturing the eardrum
with a cotton swab. cholesteatoma, a growth
    within or behind the eardrum.

    ear) causing hearing loss
  • Abnormal growth of body skin behind the eardrum
    (called cholesteatoma)

7
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages Disadvantages
Residual disease easy to detect Longer healing time
Rare recurrence Open cavity, Lifetime maintenance
Facial recess exteriorized Middle ear more shallow
Rapid healing time Water precautions necessary
Easier long-term care Technically more difficult
Hearing aids easier to fit Recurrent disease possible
No water precaution Staged operations often necessary
8
Purpose
  • Accidental injury, or the placement of ear tubes
can cause a perforated eardrum. If it's been
more than three months and the hole hasn't healed
on its own, you may need a tympanoplasty to
    surgically close it up.
  • The purpose of a tympanoplasty is to fix the
membrane, improving hearing and providing relief
as a result. Tympanoplasty will also allow the
patient to swim, which would normally be avoided
when there is a hole in the eardrum.
