2What is urinary tract infection how to prevent
them
Urinary tract infection or UTI is generally
defined as an infection in any of the part of the
urinary system - that is in kidneys, uratus,
urinary bladder and urethra. Most of the
infections are in the lower urinary tract that is
the bladder and urethra. Women are more likely to
be at a greater risk of developing UTI than
men. Typically the urine doesn't contain any
bacteria urine is the byproduct of the kidneys,
when the waste product and the excess amount of
water is removed from the body by kidneys and
urine is created, normally the urine moves
through the urinary system without any
containment, moreover the bacteria which can
cause urinary tract infection can get into the
urinary system from outside the body causing many
problems like inflammation infections. Urinar
y tract infections are generally very common that
occur mostly in 1 out of 5 women in their
lifetime, it's often seen that urinary tract
infections are more common in women this is
because the urethra in females are generally
shorter and is closer to the anus where the E
coli bacteria are very common. Older people are
also at high risk of developing cystitis. This is
due to the incomplete emptying of the bladder,
there are also several medical conditions that
are linked to the urinary tract infections that
includes and large prostate or bladder prolapse.
3Symptoms of UTI
The most common symptoms of urinary tract
infection are-
- Strong smelling urine
- Burning sensation while urinating
- A strong urge to urinate
- Passing small and frequent amount of urine
- Pain in abdomen and pelvic area
- Pressure in lower pelvis
- Painful urination
- Blood while urinating
- Abnormal colour of urine (cloudy urine)
- Frequent urination in night
- Pain during sex
- Penis pain
- Fatigue
- Fever
- vomiting
- Confusion
4Causes of UTI
The most common causes of urinary tract
infections due to microorganisms which are
usually bacteria which enters the urethra and
bladder causing inflammation and infection. As
the most common site of infection is urine
bladder the bacteria can also travel up in the
uterus and can infect the kidneys as well.
5Prevention from UTI
Urinary tract infection are considered to be the
painful and frustrating problems especially if
they keep coming back, while antibiotics helps in
clearing the UTI within few days but here are
some of the prevention tips that will help you
keep getting in the first place-
1) Practicing good hygiene - the best way to
prevent urinary tract infection is by practicing
healthy personal hygiene, this is especially
important for the women's as in womens the
urethra is shorter than in men so so it's easier
for the E coli bacteria to move from rectum to
the body, it's always recommended that you should
always wipe from front to back after the bowel
movement. Women should also practice good hygiene
during the menstrual cycle to avoid for other
infections like changing pads frequently can help
to prevent urinary tract infection.
2) Drinking plenty of water - adding extra amount
of water to the daily routine can helps to remove
the bacteria that enter the urinary tract, it's
recommended that one should drink 6 to 8 glasses
of water for a day for better and healthy urinary
system.
63) Urinate before and after intercourse - sexual
intercourse increases the risk of getting an UTI,
this is because the bacteria can easily enter the
urethra during intercourse. It's highly
recommended to reduce the risk urination should
be done before and after intercourse. The basic
idea of this is to flush out the bacteria that
can cause UTI.
74) Avoid scented products - it's important that
you should avoid any kind of chemical scented
products such a scented pads, scented powders,
deodorant and sprays. This kind of products can
disrupt the balance of microbes and can allow the
harmful bacteria to overgrow and can lead to UTI.
5) Consuming probiotics - probiotics are live
microorganisms that helps in producing good gut
bacteria, this bacteria can help to promote the
growth of good bacteria in the urinary tract.
Which helps in preventing UTI.
6) Avoid holding the pee - You should always
avoid holding urine this can encourage the
bacterial growth, try to avoid waiting more than
3 to 4 hours to pee and always try to completely
empty your bladder each time. This is more
important in case of pregnancy as holding urine
for a longer period of time can put you at
increased risk of UTI.
