Title: Cybersecurity: Emerging Trends and Challenges
1Cybersecurity Emerging Trends and
Challenges Date September 2021
2INTRODUCTION
- The cyberspace is extremely dynamic and
experiences quick changes and transformations in
the interconnected landscape. As a result, new
trends and challenges emerge quite regularly. - Covid-19 has escalated the threats and issues. We
will have a look into some of these aspects.

Drive-by Attack
Business Email Compromise (BEC)
Cryptojacking
4REMOTE WORKING
- The pandemic has forced many organizations to
adopt remote working. That has enabled
organizations to carry out their business as
usual. However, employees positioned at different
locations and a decentralized security system are
ideal conditions for bad actors to swoop in and
take advantage.

6CLOUD COMPUTING
- Another implication of remote working is the
growing adoption of cloud services and
architecture by organizations to facilitate
employees working from home. But, cloud security
is still circumspect and is a cause of concern
for the IT teams. - Surveys have revealed that approximately 8 out of
10 cybersecurity professionals remain worried
about cloud security.
7IOT DEVICES
- Internet of Things (IoT) devices have grown in
numbers and significance dramatically. The
tremendous ease of access to information, quick
data sharing and extremely low accountability are
making them vulnerable in the realm of
cybersecurity. - There are over 10 billion connected IoT devices
right now. The number is estimated to reach 22
billion by 2025.
8RANSOMWARE AND PHISHING ATTACKS
- The Phishing Insights 2021 report by Sophos
reveals that employees of 83 Indian companies
encountered increased Phishing emails in 2020.
This has been the case across the globe with
sophisticated spear phishing on the rise. Also on
the rise are Ransomware attacks, forcing
companies to pay millions to prevent their data
getting leaked. A report by Purplesec estimates
that a business will fall victim to a ransomware
attack every 14 seconds.
9AUTOMATION AND REAL-TIME MONITORING
- The multiplying rate of cyberattacks has made it
almost impossible for human beings to deal with
it alone. Therefore, organizations are
implementing solutions with greater automation
efficiency and real-time network detection and
response capabilities. This helps in achieving
comprehensive visibility and also boosts
detection of latent threats.
10ZERO-TRUST NETWORK SECURITY
- Zero Trust is a security model which counters the
age-old assumption that anything inside the
network perimeter can be trusted by default. Zero
Trust attempts to remove the word Trust from the
lexicon of network architecture. - Zero Trust is based on the principle of
maintaining strict access control and not
trusting anyone by default, even those already
inside the perimeter.
11SKILL GAP
- The demand for people with cybersecurity
expertise has risen by 18 to 20 percent in the
last few months, according to TeamLease Digital.
But, organizations in India are struggling to
find the right people. This is quite worrisome,
especially at a time when cybersecurity incidents
are proliferating. The problem needs to be dealt
with as quickly as possible and steps taken to
carry out business in a more secure environment.
