  • How to Fix Initialization Issues from Firmware
    Updates on HP LaserJet Printer

2
Introduction
  • This ppt is a complete and the ultimate guide for
you to understand how to fix the major
initialization issues in HP printer that occurs
due to the firmware updates. The instructions
will apply to both old and the new version of HP
    LaserJet Printers.

3
Check these requirements before updating the
firmware
What do you need to do?
  • HP recommends you contact the vendor of your
third-party solution to ensure the current
    firmware is compatible with it.
  • The speed of the computer, the connection type to
the printer, and whether there are any print jobs
pending in the printer queue will determine how
long it takes to complete a firmware update.
  • A network connection or USB cable is required to
    update the firmware.
  • A passcode or administrator privileges might be
required for some control panel menus.

4
Things to consider before updating the
firmware
Follow these steps before you update the firmware
  • Check the control panel for any error messages
    and clear them.
  • The printer should be in Ready mode and not in
    sleep or power-saving mode.
  • Any changes to the nonvolatile random-access
memory (NVRAM) that might warrant a firmware
update should be backed up. After the update,
these settings might revert to the new default
settings, so they must be reconfigured. The
Readme file contains a list of settings that
might be affected by the firmware update.

5
  • Make sure the host computer is fast and the
printer's hardware is configured correctly. This
is affected by the hardware configuration of the
printer, including the number of embedded
    peripheral devices, external paper-handling
devices, and/or fax capabilities if applicable.
It is an I/O transfer time that determines the
elapsed time for an update. This includes the
speed of the host computer and the method of I/O
(local port or network), as well as how long it
    takes the printer to re-initialize.

Steps to Fix these Issues
Print a configuration page
  • Get the IP address and firmware level by printing
    the configuration page.
  • You can select Administration or the Menu icon on
    the printer control panel.
  • Click the INFORMATION button.
  • You can find this menu under CONFIGURATION/STATUS
    PAGES.
  • You can also print the CONFIGURATION PAGE option.
  • You can print the document or click OK.
  • Determine the current firmware level by looking
at the "Device Information" section on the
printed configuration page. Firmware date codes
will look like this 20040322 48.001.0.

7
Download the Latest Firmware
  • On HP.com, the HP LaserJet firmware download
contains the printer firmware, embedded JetDirect
(if applicable), and HP paper handling
accessories that work with the printer in one
    convenient file.

8
  • Make sure you know what the current firmware
version is for your printer, and compare this to
the firmware version on your printer (see the
    configuration page).
  • Alternatively, you can download the firmware
directly from the printer's download page, and
    then extract all files
  • Ensure the printer is turned on and ready.
  • Make a note of where the .rfu file is located.

9
Update the Firmware
  • You can update the firmware remotely for a single
printer or for multiple printers simultaneously
using HP Web Jetadmin 10.4 SR2 or later.
  • Each of these steps takes a different amount of
time- based on the size of the printer firmware
files and the server's resources. HP recommends
that while firmware upgrades are running, you
keep other HP Web Jetadmin tasks to a minimum
because it is a resource-intensive process.

10
