The 6 Biggest Mistakes When Installing Drywall
3
Drywall is a popular material in the construction
world. With the help of professionals or if you
as a handyman can divide a space in two, finish
an attic or install a retention wall using
drywall plasterboard. You better keep an eye on
the manufacturers guidelines. Where some
mistakes are easy to avoid, some arent. Heres a
list of mistakes that people usually make when
installing drywalls. Read on to find how to avoid
these mistakes.
4
Mistake 1 Grouting in Bad Weather Conditions
Do not start grouting and finishing the
plasterboard until the temperature and humidity
of the room are at their final level. In other
words, it is not a good idea to finish
installing drywall if the home is not yet wind
and rainproof or in cold or damp conditions.
This can result in cracking in the joints. Thus,
take care of the weather conditions before you
install drywall. The best drywall contractors in
Vancouver know the feasible conditions for
installation, so you can always take the help.
5
Mistake 2 Not Taking The Substrate into Account
To obtain a crack-free surface, apply drywall to
a stable surface. Do you apply plasterboard
under a roof construction? Then first, apply a
framework to absorb any settlement and tensions
of the roof construction. Go for drywall framing
for the best results.
6
Mistake 3 Choosing the Wrong Finish For
Connection With Other Materials
Avoid that a wall or ceiling made of drywall
becomes wedged between the other architectural
surfaces of the building. This way, you run a
lot less risk of cracking, for example, due to
changes in humidity and temperature. Where
drywall touches another building element, such
as a plastered wall or ceiling, you must clear
the ceiling. Provide a wide and decorative joint
for this, cut the joint product free with the
help of a flexible knife or apply a separation
tape that you adhere to the building component
beforehand (after the jointing work, you simply
cut away the part of the tape that protrudes).
7
Mistake 4 Finishing Without a Primer
A golden rule among painters if the substrate
consists of different materials, first treat the
surface with a primer or a base coat. This way,
you avoid any shade differences when you apply
the final layers of paint. This rule also
applies to drywall. The joint product and the
plasterboard cardboard have different absorption
capacities. You also need a primer if you are
applying wallpaper to the drywall. This prevents
the cardboard from coming off the plasterboard
if you want to replace your wallpaper after a
few years.
8
Mistake 5 Using drywall that is too thin
Thin plasterboard is more susceptible to
deflection and deformation than thicker
plasterboard. It is recommended to use a plate
of at least 12.5 mm thick on a supporting
structure framework.
9
Mistake 6 Incorrectly Joining The Edges
To obtain a flat wall or ceiling, you have to
fill up the joints correctly. The grouting
product is applied in several stages. Always
respect the minimum curing time of the
underlying layers. Perfectly smooth and flat
surfaces can only be obtained by providing the
entire ceiling or the entire wall with a thin
and suitable finishing layer. Always follow the
manufacturers guidelines while installing the
drywall panels. Cant do it all yourself? Then
contact the Drywall contractors in Lower
Mainland or your nearest place.
