1
Who Are The Samaritans Samaritans Israelites
The Samaritans are the remnant of the Ancient
Samaritans northern kingdom of Israel,
descendants of the tribes Joseph, Menashe, and
Levi, who have remained in Samaria and survived
the Assyrian exile in the years 721-722 BCE. The
Samaritans are an ethno-religious group
originating from the Israelites or Hebrews of the
Ancient Near East. They claim ancestry from the
tribe of Ephraim and tribe of Manasseh as well as
from the Levites who have links to ancient
Samaria from the period of their entry into
Canaan. Ancient Samaritans are also known as
Bene-Yisrael Ha-Shamerem in Hebrew, which
means The Keepers as they observe the ancient
Israelite tradition since the time of their
prophet Moses and the people of Israel. In the
modern days, Samaritans and Jews, the terms
given by the Assyrians, specify the settlement of
the Samaritans in the area of Samaria and the
Jews in the area of Judah.

Tur in Arabic, Tur Barakha in Aramaic, means the
blessed mountain) is one of the highest peaks in
the west Bank, located in Ephraim, and rises to
886m above sea level. Together with Mount Gerizim
(Hargrizm- in one word as it is written in
Samaritan texts) is the place where God has
choosen for his divine presence and is the most
sacred place to the Samaritans. The last

Samaritan Devotion is to The God of Israel Sole
Object of Samaritan Worship
The first principle of the Samaritan declaration
is, One God, who is the God of Israel. The God
of Israel is the sole object of Samaritan Worship
The Samaritans are adherents of Samaritanism, a
religion closely related to Judaism. Samaritans
believe that Samaritan worship, based on the
Samaritan Pentateuch, is the true religion of the
ancient Israelites from before the Babylonian
Captivity, that is persevered by those who
remained in the Land of Israel which is opposed
to Judaism as they see it as a related but
altered and amended religion, which was brought
back by those returning from the Babylonian
Captivity.
