2 - Turkey is located in both Europe and Asia. It is
one of the larger countries in the region in
terms of land area and population. Almost the
entire country lies in Asia, including the Asia
Minor peninsula and, to the east, part of the
Armenian Highlands. The remaining part, Turkish
Thrace, lies in the southeastern part of Europe.
It is part of a former empire that once in Europe
occupied a significant part of the Balkans. - Turkey shares border with Greece and Bulgaria to
the northwest, Black Sea in the north, Georgia in
the northeast, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran to
the east, Iraq to the southeast, Syria and the
Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Aegean Sea

3The flag of Turkey
The flag of Turkey (Türk bayragi) is a red flag
with a white star and crescent. The flag is often
called al bayrak (the red flag). The current
design of the Turkish flag comes directly from
the late Ottoman flag.
4 - The capital of Turkey is Ankara with a population
of about 5 million. However, the largest and most
well-known city is Istanbul with an agglomeration
of about 15 million inhabitants - the country's
economic, cultural and historic center. - Istanbul was founded by the ancient Greeks as
Byzantium. Later as Constantinople, it was the
capital of the Byzantine Empire for many
centuries. In 1453 it was conquered by the
Ottomans and became the new capital of the
Ottoman Empire. In 1930 it adopted its current

6Climate
- Turkey's diverse climate - generally dry,
semi-continental, Mediterranean - is strongly
influenced by the presence of the sea in the
north, south and west, and by the mountains that
cover most of the country. The sea and mountains
create contrasts between the interior of the
country and its coastal fringes. Several areas
experiences maximum winter rains, typical of the
Mediterranean system, and droughts are common in
the summer. However, the country's altitude means
that winters are often much colder than in
Mediterranean climates, and there are significant
differences between winter and summer
temperatures.

Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Istanbul (Sultan Ahmet
Camii), also known as the Blue Mosque. It was
constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule
of Ahmed I
Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) - originally a church,
then a mosque, later a museum, and now a mosque
again. It was built by the Byzantine emperor
Justinian I in 532537
