Types of Asthma
  • There are many types of asthma, brought on by
    many triggers.
  • Adult-Onset Asthma - Some people dont show signs
of having asthma until they are adults. This is
    known as adult-onset asthma.
  • Allergic Asthma - Not everyone who has allergies
has asthma. Allergic asthma is triggered by
allergens such as pollen, pets and dust.
  • Asthma-COPD Overlap - Chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) is a collection of lung
diseases that cause breathing problems and
obstruct airflow. This group of diseases can
include severe asthma, emphysema and chronic
    bronchitis.
  • Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) - If
physical exertion or exercise makes it difficult
for you to breathe, and you start wheezing or
coughing. You may have exercise-induced asthma.

4
Types of Asthma
  • Nonallergic Asthma - Particles in the air which
are not typical allergens like - cigarette smoke,
air fresheners, cold air, burning wood etc can
    cause asthma.
  • Occupational Asthma- If you experience wheezing,
coughing, chest tightness or shortness of breath
at work, you may have occupational asthma.

    progressively worsens over nightfall.
  • Cough-variant asthma - In this type of asthma,
dry coughing is the main symptom and theres no
    shortness of breath or wheezing.

Causes of Asthma
  • It isn't clear why some people get asthma. Asthma
can cause due to a combination of environmental
    and genetic factors.
  • Airborne allergens, such as pollen, dust mites,
    mold spores, pet dander
  • Respiratory infections, such as the common cold
  • Physical activity
  • Cold air
  • Air pollutants and irritants, such as smoke
  • Certain medications, including beta blockers,
    aspirin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Strong emotions and stress
  • Sulfites and preservatives including shrimp,
dried fruit, processed potatoes, beer and wine
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a
condition in which stomach acids back up into
    your throat

6
Risk factors
  • A number of factors are thought to increase your
chances of developing asthma. They include
  • Having a blood relative with asthma, such as a
    parent or sibling
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Exposure to exhaust fumes or other types of
    pollution
  • Exposure to occupational triggers, such as
chemicals used in farming, hairdressing and
    manufacturing
  • Having another allergic condition, which causes
red, itchy skin, a runny nose, congestion and
    itchy eyes

7
Treatment Options
  • Treatments taking steps to avoid triggers and
tracking your breathing to make sure your
medications are keeping symptoms under control.
  • Long-term control medications reduce the swelling
(inflammation) in your airways that leads to
    symptoms.
  • Quick-relief inhalers (bronchodilators) quickly
open swollen airways that are limiting breathing.
In some cases, allergy medications are necessary.
  • Allergy medications may help if your asthma is
triggered or worsened by allergies. Allergy shots
    (immunotherapy) and Biologics gradually reduce
your immune system reaction to specific
    allergens.
  • Bronchial Thermoplasty treatment is used for
severe asthma that doesn't improve with inhaled
    corticosteroids or other long-term asthma
    medications.
  • Your doctor may also recommend tracking your
asthma symptoms or using a peak flow meter on a
regular basis to monitor how well your treatment
    is controlling your asthma.
