Title: Lightning Protection System – Protect your Assets from Lightning Damage
1Lightning Protection Systems
Protect your Assets from Lightning Damage
2Lightning is a final result of the natural
creation of an electrical charge imbalance in the
Earths atmosphere. Lightning occurs both within
the atmosphere, cloud-to-cloud lightning, and
from the atmosphere to the earth, sky to ground
lightning or the reverse, ground to sky
discharge. Regardless of the direction of the
lightning stroke, a great deal of energy is
released as the electrical charge balance of the
atmosphere-earth is restored. An average
lightning strike consists of three strokes, with
a peak current flow of 18,000 amperes for the
first impulse and about half that amount of
current flowing in the second and third
strokes. A lightning protection system is
designed to protect a structure from damage due
to lightning strikes.

3Lightning protection components at a glance
- An air terminal, down conductor, and at least one
ground plate or rod for each beacon tower, should
be installed. - The air terminal should be installed at the top
of the tower with the tip of the rod extending
not less than 150 mm (6 in) above the top of the
beacon. - Down-conductor cables should be securely fastened
to the surface of the tower leg with suitable
bronze fasteners having bronze or noncorrosive
metal bolts. Sharp turns or bends in the down
conductor are not permitted. - All connections of cable-to-cable, cable-to-air
terminals, and cable-to-ground plates or rods
must be made with solder less connectors or
noncorrosive metal. - The down-conductor cable shall be securely
attached to ground rods or plates. The ground rod
shall be driven into the ground so that the top
is at least 150 mm (6 in) below grade. The
down-conductor shall be firmly attached to the
ground plate or rod by means of a ground
connector or clamp.

4How to reduce lightning damage by lowering the
incidence of a direct lightning strike to
buildings, communication towers, electric utility
substations, industrial facilities, etc?
- By using a powerful tool like
- Charge Dissipation - This is a scientific process
first touched on by Benjamin Franklin more than
two centuries ago. However, since then, and most
notably over the last twenty years, the
technology of static charge dissipation has
developed to the point where damage to electronic
equipment can be reduced or eliminated, depending
on the site protection systems selected. Many
sites have never had a recurrence of a direct
lightning after installing a properly engineered
lightning production system. - Today, there are several types of code-compliant
lightning protection systems in use, and they
should always be installed by trusted and
certified lightning protection companies like
Lightning Eliminators.
