Title: Photographic Equipment
1EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
2Some consumer-grade cameras with resolutions
surpass 10MP these days, so youve got to take
shots that stand out. What these consumer cameras
cant do is capture that blown-out, fuzzy
background with sharp foreground at a low
aperture. Make sure to acquire a fast lens a
lens with low aperture ability
3The requirement for Speed
To put things into perspective, your typical kit
lens is most likely 18-50mm that can only drop
down to 4.5, maybe 3.5 at full zoom. Thats not
so great when youre trying to get a great shot
of a bride and the aperture cranks up to 5.0,
which takes a lot of light to pull off and wont
separate the foreground from the background.
4Faster Than light
When assessing your most immediate Photographic
Equipment requirement, your standard kit will be
great out of the box for portraits or anything
with studio lighting and flash lighting. Take
that same setup into a church or an environment
where you cant use your flash and youre going
to be kicking yourself for not picking up a fast
lens. With this addition to your camera bag,
youll now able to get that shot across the room
with natural lighting.
5With the kit lens, you have to be so close that
you become a part of the process instead of
observing it. I've been to weddings where a kit
lens was the only lens the photographer had, and
I couldn't help but think about all the shots
that they weren't getting because of the
limitations of the lens. Capturing more images
and moments means that you can offer the client
more options. You want to separate yourself from
the rest of the pack to build your reputation and
your business.
6Pretty Pixels
In reality, megapixels may be necessary to the
layman, but you should succeed at this type of
photography with any DSLR made after 2007.
Clients may be quite impressed with the
megapixels, but anything above 8MP will be more
than adequate for the print sizes your clients
will need. Most people can't tell the difference
between 8MP and 20MP when the photo is printed
and set in an album. As far as cameras go, I
would recommend Canon and Nikon bodies. These two
brands have been dominant in the digital
photography market.
