Panchatantra Stories in English for kids
  • A washerman wanted someone to carry his clothes.
So, he bought a donkey. The donkey started
working for the washerman. The donkey carried
unwashed clothes from the hut to the river and
then washed clothes loaded on his back from the
river to the hut. The donkey was happy as this
work seemed to be easy for him. But the donkey
was not satisfied and sad as the washerman did
not provide enough food for him.

  • The donkey used to feel hungry all the time. One
morning, the donkey happened to cross a field on
his way. As he was hungry, he ate the crops in
the field as no one was watching him. He felt
nice and began to eat daily. One day, while
eating the crops, the donkey felt someone was
watching him. He watched around and found a fox
staring at him. The donkey got scared thinking
that the fox would hurt him. The fox smiled and
began to talk with the donkey. The donkey and the
fox became friends. They met in the same field
and ate the crops daily. The donkey was very
happy that it found a good friend and got good
food to eat. The donkey felt that his life was so
good. One night, the donkey and the fox met again
in the same field. They saw big watermelons in
the field. Both of them started to eat
watermelons. As the watermelons were very sweet
and juicy, they enjoyed eating them. The donkey
told the fox that he wanted to sing as it was
feeling happy. The fox did not want the donkey to
sing as the man who looks after the field might
hear and punish them. But the donkey did not
listen to the fox words and started to sing
loudly. The donkey also told the fox that singing
makes him happier. Again, the fox asked the
donkey not to sing as the field owner sleeps
close by the field and will beat them if he hears
him singing. But the donkey never listened to the
fox. So, the fox asked him to sing after he left.
The fox left from that place. The donkey started
to sing loudly again. The owner of the field
heard the donkey braying loudly and woke up.
Meanwhile, the clever fox knew the donkey was
braying but not singing. So, the fox left from
there. The owner saw the donkey in the field and
found that most crops were eaten. The owner
thought that the donkey alone ate everything as
he could see only the donkey was there in the
field. He became angry and picked up a stick and
ran towards the donkey. The donkey did not watch
the man coming towards it as it was busy singing.
The man beat the donkey black and blue. The
donkey started crying and ran to the next field
for life. The donkey realized that if he would
have listened to the fox, this wouldn't have
happened. He learned a life lesson and never sang
    thereafter.
