bloomed and blossomed  over the centuries.
  • Jamdani, the word is an amalgamation of two
words jam meaning flower and dani meaning
vase. The words are taken from the Persian
language, which shows its cross cultural
    history.
  • Types of Jamdani Sarees

Baluchari Sarees
  • Baluchari Sarees are a part of the Bengali
culture as they originate from the village of
Baluchar in Murshidabad from where they derive
this name. These intricately woven, 7 ft long
pieces of fine silk are woven with motifs and
murals depicting the life and culture of early
life in Bengal. These motifs and murals showthe
mythological stories of Hinduism in the pallu
of the saree. It takes immense labor and skill to
make these sarees. It requires at least  a week
    to complete one saree.
  • Baluchari Sarees have a rich history in Bengal.
They were first seen in Bengal in the 18th
century when the nawab of Bengal, Murshidkuli
Khan brought along the skill/art from Dhaka in
todays Bangladesh, to the small village of
Baluchar in Murshidabad. In the beginning, the
weavers mainly focused on  portraying the royalty
    on the sarees.
  • Baluchari Sarees, at the time of their origin,
were woven in the traditional jala looms in
Murshidabad. In this process the reference design
(jala) was first made which was used as the
    master design copy.

Bishnupuri Silk Saree
  • Bishnupur, which is a town in the district of
Bankura in West Bengal, is known mainly for its
craftsmanship in sarees and its terracotta
    artwork .
  • It is famous for its silk weaving producing
beautiful and exquisite Baluchari Sarees. In
addition, it is known also for the Bishnupuri
silk sarees which are light in weight and
    extremely fine in texture.
  • The Bishnupuri Silk Saree industry runs parallel
to the Baluchari Saree industry. This being so
since the Baluchari Sarees take a very long time
to weave the intricate work thus slowing down the
business a bit. This parallel industry created
enough work for the business to stay afloat.
  • Types of Bishnupuri Silk Sarees
  • Block Print is a style of designing used in
Bishnupuri sarees where a piece of wood is carved
accordingly, dipped in paint and the design is
manually put on the piece of cloth wherever the
artist chooses to. This creates beautiful
patterns over the cloth at symmetrical distances.
  • Acid Print is a type of dye print that uses acid
dyes which react with silk and other chemicals to
dye the cloth. It creates beautiful patterns on
the cloth mainly on the pallu.
  • Batik Print is a type of wax print that is done
over the whole cloth and is used to create
beautiful symmetric designs over the cloth of
contrasting colours that make the sarees look
    attractive and bright.
