1
How Long Does It Take To Recover From Antireflux
Surgery?
  • Some patients dont experience the desired
symptomatic relief after taking antacids and
other drugs such as proton pump inhibitors. When
    GERD symptoms, especially feelings of
    regurgitation are persistent despite taking
medicines religiously, antireflux surgery is an
option you should discuss with your physician.
Before deciding on the best way forward, you
should get a full evaluation by a local surgeon
and get familiar with the different surgical
    options.

2
Antireflux Surgery Recovery
  • Just like with any other surgical intervention,
patients need some time to recover from
antireflux surgery. The length of the recovery
period and the specific instructions youll need
to follow will ultimately depend on the specific
type of surgery. There are different procedures
that can be used to treat GERD, among them Nissen
    fundoplication, LINX, and gastric bypass.

3
LINX Surgery
  • LINX surgery uses a small titanium device (Linx)
that restores the reflux barrier while ensuring
easy passage for solid and liquid food to the
stomach. Due to the minimally invasive nature of
the procedure, patients undergo a shorter
recovery period with a lesser amount of pain.
During the first two weeks of recovery, it is
important that patients carefully chew their
food, eat frequent small meals, and limit dry
foods. During subsequent weeks, the esophageal
tissue will heal and form scars, which can cause
some difficulty swallowing. Warm liquids can help
alleviate such symptoms by relaxing the muscle
    around the device.

4
Fundoplication
  • Fundoplication surgery is the most common
surgical treatment for GERD. The recovery period
can vary depending on whether the surgery is
performed using an open technique or a
laparoscopic or minimally invasive approach. With
open surgery, patients typically require a week
of hospital stay. On the other hand, laparoscopic
Nissen fundoplication requires a couple of days
of in-hospital recovery and most patients can
return to work within a week. It is important to
note that after the procedure, patients have to
follow a special diet for some time.

5
Gastric Bypass
  • During gastric bypass anti-reflux surgery, the
acid-producing part of the stomach is separated
from the esophagus, which prevents acid from
damaging the esophagus. For patients with a BMI
over 35, this type of surgery is an excellent
option to treat GERD and other health conditions.
Since gastric bypass is done through a minimally
invasive approach, the recovery period is
generally short. Patients that undergo gastric
bypass surgery will need to follow a post-surgery
    diet.

6
Bottom Line
  • People experiencing gastric reflux symptoms and
cant get relief through medical treatment can
get better results by undergoing antireflux
surgery. To determine which procedure is best for
you, you should get a full examination from a
general surgeon. The best way to learn more about
this GERD treatment option is to book an
appointment with your Dallas physician. Opt for a
medical center that offers minimally invasive
surgical options such as Robotic Bariatric
Surgery in Dallas, Fort Worth, and other
    locations.
