A How-To Guide to Stainless Steel Supply and
Distribution
2
Introduction
  • Although various types of metal exist, steel
remains one of the most popular in terms of its
cost-effectiveness, its ease of use, and its
    resistance to corrosion.
  • Steel is an artificial industrial creation, an
alloy made of a mixture of different metals.
Essentially, it is made up of a mixture iron and
carbon, which makes it stronger than iron in its
original form. In its variation as stainless
steel, it is quite versatile and cannot be
    corroded.

3
  • Although stainless steel is a common type of
metal, it has a variety of surprising uses. In
this article, we will examine some of the
    lesser-known facts about stainless steel.

What Do We Know About Stainless Steel?
  • Famed for being resistant to corrosion, many
people assume that stainless steel is entirely
rust-free. However, this is only partly true.
Steel can corrode and degrade over time if
continuously exposed to the elements. For this
reason, items or tools made of stainless steel
should be stored in places where they are not
    exposed to oxygen.

6
  • Most people are unaware that there are several
types of stainless steel with different
components. These differences are a result of
different percentages of chromium and other
metals used. There are five types of stainless
steel in existence, namely, ferritic stainless
    steel, austenitic stainless steel, precipitation
    hardened stainless steel, martensitic stainless
    steel, and duplex stainless steel.

7
  • Stainless steel ranks among the most re-usable
metal products in the world. Once discarded, an
item made of stainless steel can be remodeled
into another different item with ease.
  • Many industries supply their workers with
stainless steel clothing (protective wear made
from stainless steel that has been woven into a
    thread).

8
  • Stainless steel in its many forms and grades is
used for different purposes. When it comes to the
supply and distribution of steel, the steel
recipient must choose the type and grade of
stainless steel most suited to their needs.
Stainless steel grades are divided into steel
plates and round bars depending on where they
    will be used.

9
How Are the Stainless-Steel Grades Classified?
10
SS 13-8PH
  • This grades steel plate is used mainly in the
manufacture of electronic circuit boards, as well
as making steel linings in office furniture to
increase their aesthetic appeal. The measurements
supplied will depend on the plates intended use.
  • On the other hand, this grades steel bar
counterpart has numerous uses and comes in
different shapes as well. For example, the steel
bar is used to make vehicle parts and aesthetics.

11
  • This grade is most suitable for engineering such
as the manufacture and maintenance of aircraft
because of its high resistance to corrosion by
external factors, such as weather. Nickel and
molybdenum, which are added onto the chromium,
make this grade stand out for its resistance to
    corrosion.

12
SS 15-5PH
  • This grade is known for being very tough and
strong. It is used widely in the food processing
    industry because its non-corrosive properties
offer a high degree of compliance in meeting
health regulations. The 15-5PH is also used in
the oil industry because of these same
    non-corrosive properties.

13
SS 17-4 PH
  • This is the most commonly used grade of steel due
to its low cost, as well as its use in very
important industries. For example, its resistance
to corrosion makes it suitable for use in the
fabrication of sea vessels. The 17-4 PH grade is
also used to make dry casks, which are storage
containers for used fuel in the nuclear industry.

14
Ams 5643
  • This variation of stainless steel alloy falls
under the 17-4 grouping. It is often used in the
aeronautical industry because of its superior
strength and resistance to harsh climatic
    conditions.

15
Ams 5659
  • The AMS 5659 is grouped under the 15-5 PH grade.
It responds favorably to welding, and is often
used in aircrafts similar to its 5643
counterparts. It is also extensively used in the
    oil and nuclear industries.

16
  • Although similar in many ways, these various
grades of stainless steel all possess differences
in composition, which sets them apart and makes
them most suitable for their respective
industries. Although this information may appear
a bit overwhelming at first, choosing a grade
does not have to be a difficult process. The
easiest and quickest way to find out the type and
grade of stainless steel one requires is to find
out the composition of metal involved in its
manufacture. The properties of the alloys will
determine the properties of the stainless steel
    produced.
