Title: ACE SI Training

1
ACE SISuicide Prevention Training
2
  • Theres a common experience a lot of us had when
    we were younger.

3
Ramon Noodles
4
  • Most of us cook Ramon Noodles in the microwave
for three minutes. I made a rookie mistake when I
was 13 years old and cooked Ramon Noodles in a
container with a lid. Long story short, the
trapped heat inside the closed container had no
where to go and there was an explosion. The
microwave was plastered with sticky noodles.

5
  • Our lives are no different than something cooking
in the microwave. We all go through things in
life (risk factors) that make us stressed. If we
keep stress bottled up inside, our lives can
become like a closed container being heated.

7
  • We cant prevent every possible problem in our
lives. But we can get rid of the stress caused by
    our problems through protective forces.
Protective forces give our lives purpose and
    support.

8
  • Examples of personal protective factors
  • Religious worship
  • Strong family support
  • Physical fitness
  • Volunteering in the community
  • Playing a musical instrument
  • Playing sports with friends
  • Academic achievements

  • Its important to note that just because someone
has risk factors doesnt mean they may be
thinking about suicide. We all go through things
in life. Some people have protective forces to
    mitigate their risk factors.

11
  • But if someone becomes like a closed container
and allows the stress from their risk factors to
build up, their risk factors can turn into
    warning signs.

13
  • Warning signs, on the other hand, are strong
indicators someone is at a high risk for thinking
    about suicide.

14
  • Were all familiar with the word meddling. From
a young age were taught not to meddle in other
peoples business. But when youve got a battle
buddy or soldier youre supervising thats
showing warning signs, its one of the few times
in life when its permissible to meddle and get
    them the help they need.

15
  • ACE-SI (Ask, Care, Escort) is an effective three
step process for getting someone help when
    theyre exhibiting warning signs.

19
  • We need to avoid creating a stigma around people
getting help. Everyone should feel comfortable
    getting help when needed.

20
  • Its important to be mature and confidential when
getting someone help. The last thing someone
needs is the details of their problem(s) being
    shared throughout the unit.

21
  • Avoid the temptation to judge when getting
someone help. What may seem trivial or
insignificant to one person may be perceived as a
life altering situation to someone else.
